When he was training, safety gear consisted of wet tea towels - one wrapped around each fist, and a few more for headgear (two twisted and knotted around the head at forehead level, another one or two running down under the chin). ... can't help but think he would have enjoyed having those teeth in his head during his later years. Yes, I am that old and was that stupid then. During tournaments, psyching was part of the action. One common practice was to show off your blackened knuckles (from makiwara training). But one guy from my school had his own intimidating routine. He would flash a big smile at his opponent, and show off all his gums. He no longer had any front teeth, and he would take off his dentures during tournaments, and in effect was saying, I have nothing more to lose there, but you do.
