Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hat trick Mar 21 2006 By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner JACOB STEWART sealed a hat trick of stick fighting titles at the British Escrima Championships in Bristol. The 13-year-old from Lowerhouses recovered from gastric flu to win the Under 16 forms section. But Jacob, who suffers from dyspraxia (a lack of co-ordination skills) was unable to hold on to his fighting title, and had to settle for a bronze medal. --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2006 14:36:29 -0800 From: "Ray Terry" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Pableo to lead RP team to world event Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Wednesday, March 22, 2006 Pableo to lead RP team to world event Doce Pares master and four-time world champion Percival Pableo and fellow instructors will lead the Philippine Team that will see action in the 2nd Doce Pares World Championships and Congress in St. Ives Cornwall, England. The World Championships and Congress will be on April 6-15 and is expected to gather Doce Pares practitioners around the world. Masters Romulo Rey, Rodolfo Angeles Jr., Danritchell Guba and Onairos Cortel will join World Headquarters Head of Instructors Pableo in the championship and congress. Pableo said the four masters from the World Headquarters will assist him in the Congress, where he will conduct a seminar among Doce Pares practitioners. "The masters who will come along with me will perform a series of exhibitions for the World Congress. They also will introduce new techniques," said Pableo. He added that the said masters will compete in Forms and Sparring events to give other competitors a run for their money, while others will lend their expertise in the officiating to ensure a world-class sporting event. Other eskrimadors who made it to the team were Craig Compomanes, Richie Revenche, Jermey Climaco, Joaquin Quintana, Maribeth de Castro, Jean Balansag, Eliza Mil Sinamban, Maria Leona Duyungan and Marina Salinas. The RP Team which will be hosted by Doce Pares Grandmaster Danny Guba and Rapid Arnis chief instructor Pat O'Malley, is expected to leave for England on the first week of April. The RP Team will also hold a series of pocket seminars prior and after the World Championships and Congress. --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Peter Gow" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2006 22:37:22 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Blackened knuckles Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Jay de Leon, I also did some karate a long time ago - Goju Kai. When I first started full contact sparing I  remember having black and blue toes for months and received a kick above my left eye for which I needed stitches - still have the scar there to remind me - Not that I want to compare scars with you. Originally we had no protective equipment when we spared but this changed over time. They had similar stuff here in the U.S., too. I heard stories from Bob Wall and Duke Tirschel, with their contemporaries like Chuck Norris, Skipper Mullins, Mike Stone, and others. I hear the old Hawaiian guys like the kajukenbo, lima lama and lua guys were pretty brutal, too. The style that has carried that hardnosed tradition through today seems to be the kyokushin guys, though there are a few hardcore shorin-ryu, Yaw-Yan and local Sikaran boys left in the Philippines. I have an article coming out in a month or so in FMA Digest entitled "Remembrances of Dojos Past" which describes a lot of this kind of sparring. Stay tuned. To continue training we learned how to absorb and deal out punishment, and to -never- show pain. Even tho mouthguards are not really for the protection of your teeth, we didn't wear them. We just kept the jaw clinched which helps to keep it from getting broken. No gloves, headgear or shin guards. Cups did exist then and yes I wore one. That was about it. No point tournaments. Only full-contact fighting in three 3-min rounds.
