They have started to use it a singular block as if playing a game rather than seeing it as a last resort. I know that the thai trainers have changed the angle of the shin so its facing dead ahead so the shield takes the shin on the muscle, allowing fighters quicker recovery and therefore greater income potential. in my JKD and Kali upbringing i was encouraged not to do singular blocks, but to block/hit or simply stop hit. By taking the shin pads away they are more prone to look for other methods of countering the roundhouse kick. Headguards are only really used a week or so before a fight in order to get them used to tunnel vision and stop potential cuts. On 3/22/06, Ray wrote: > > . No gloves, headgear or shin guards. Crafty Dog ============================================ http://www.mass.gov/legis/bills/senate/st01/st01384.htm AN ACT RELATIVE TO THE POSSESSION OF A MACHETE Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows: SECTION 1. Subsection (b) of section 10 of chapter 269 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2002 Official Edition is hereby amended by inserting after the word "inches", in line 67, the following word:- , machete. SECTION 2. Said subsection (b) of said section 10 of said chapter 269, as so appearing, is hereby further amended by adding the following paragraph:- For purposes of this section, "machete" means "a heavy knife at least 18 inches in length and having a blade at least 1.5 inches wide at its broadest measurement. This subsection shall not apply to carrying a machete on one's person or in a vehicle if the machete is carried for the purpose of cutting vegetation or if the machete is being transported for the purpose of cutting vegetation. In a prosecution of a violation of this subsection, there shall be a permissible inference that such carrying of a machete is not for the purposes of cutting vegetation. Such presumption may be rebutted. Any individual who requires a machete for the purposes of cutting vegetation shall register the machete with the local police department on an annual basis and, upon payment of an appropriate annual registration fee as determined by the local granting authority, shall be issued a permit authorizing him to possess the machete solely for the purposes of cutting vegetation. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "rob mulligan" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2006 13:29:07 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Pananandata-Marinas seminar in New York Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Just a reminder-   Punong Guro Amante P. “Mat” Marinas will be giving a seminar in Pananandata-Marinas at Fighthouse  New York City on Sunday April 2nd. Mat Marinas is highly regarded as a practitioner, teacher and author of the Filipino martial arts. He was the first person to write a book in English about the FMA and has authored numerous books, video tapes, and scores of magazine articles over the thirty plus years that he has been living in the United States. PG Marinas will be teaching the techniques of several of the weapons of Pananandata-Marinas, as well as empty hand and unarmored free-fighting. Follow this link for more information: http://fighthouse.com/PananandataMarinas2520flyer.pdf   Po hasn’t had a seminar in New York for several years, so this should be an excellent opportunity to welcome him back.   Salamat,   Rob Mulligan www.kwikstik.com                         --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2006 12:15:59 -0800 (PST) From: Marc Scott To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] RE: Ray Floro Seminar Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Cecil, It will definately be in Los Angeles, we are still fanializing our choice of venues. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Dan began by introducing himself and giving a little of his background in martial arts and Modern Arnis. We moved switfly into the material. Dan covered disarms to strikes 1-5 in depth, with the final disarms to strikes 6-12 briefly shown. Whilst most of the disarms displayed were familiar, Dan helped improved them and make them all more efficient thanks to the nuances he introduced. I think all of my guys (some with years of experience, some with weeks!) enjoyed what was taught, especially Nick Goodwin, who thanks to years of Yoga practice, is somewhat more flexible than your average punter! Dan was able to deal with Nick by explaining how the "Flow" within FMA is used to deal with the unexpected! Dan showed us a few counters to the disarms, then showed us how to counter the counters! He did say he has studied countering counters, and as I have just got my hands on a CD-ROM with five of his Modern Arnis books on it I may already have this study available to me. If not, I think I see another book coming!! Then Dan said.....;-) We moved onto empty hand locks, and again for anyone with some experience the locks were familiar. And again, Dan helped improve all of them, by demonstraing how the correct use of posture (yours and your opponents) can be utilised to the best effect. Here Nicks flexibility was nullified by a rather vicious manouever which is a continuation of one of my favourite moves :-) SHO' NUFF! The evening ending with a Q & A session, with Dan proudly giving us HIS Bruce Lee story. Out of all of the people who met, trained and worked with Bruce Lee, Dan Anderson, Senior Master of Modern Arnis, is the only living soul who didn't teach BL anything!!!! I intend to get Dan back next time he is in the UK, hopefully for a full days training. Watch this space. I would like to extend my thanks to Iain Abernethey who arranged the workshop and got Dan to the venue. Cheers.
