List members seem to use the words STRATEGY & TACTICS differently, but to me they have always been synonymous. A quick look at my Oxford English dictionary has left me none the wiser. Is there a difference? If so, what is it? Jon "There's nothing more dangerous than a blunt knife" http://www.pecahan.net --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2006 09:58:28 -0800 From: "Joseph Marana" Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Strategy & Tactics To: Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net While they certainly can be synonomous, I personally use the word strategy when conceptualizing an overall plan of action. I use the word tactic to describe a technique, or a smaller plan within an overarching scheme (strategy). To give an example, I might describe a head-level hooking kick as a particular tactic against an opponent. Using this kick (tactic) may not be the best strategy against an opponents knife-weilding hand, or in an elevator or staircase. It may however be a great strategy to use that tactic within the confines of a point tournament structure. That is my personal preference in use. Here are some additional definitions of both terms: Strategy 1: The science and art of using all the forces of a nation to execute approved plans as effectively as possible during peace or war. 2: The science and art of military command as applied to the overall planning and conduct of large-scale combat operations. 3: A plan of action resulting from strategy or intended to accomplish a specific goal. See Synonyms at plan. 4: The art or skill of using stratagems in endeavors such as politics and business. - The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition 1: an elaborate and systematic plan of action [syn: scheme] 2: the branch of military science dealing with military command and the planning and conduct of a war - Source: WordNet ® 2.0, © 2003 Princeton University Tactic 1: An expedient for achieving a goal; a maneuver. - The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition 1: a plan for attaining a particular goal [syn: maneuver, manoeuvre] - Source: WordNet ® 2.0, © 2003 Princeton University -----Original Message----- From: Jon Broster [mailto:jonbroster@yahoo.co.uk] Sent: Sunday, March 26, 2006 7:58 AM To: Eskrima Digest Subject: [Eskrima] Strategy & Tactics Hi, I was wondering if I am missing something. I use the term "strategy" to apply to the bigger picture and I use the term "tactics" to apply to the smaller picture. So the "strategy" is a general plan of attack and the "tactics" are the specific methods/techniques I employ to achieve the objective of the "strategy". As I said, though, that's just my personal distinction and the one shared by my immediate group of peers. I don't know what (if any) distinction others make. Mike Casto I.M.P.A.C.T.
