The choice of pen is important.

Ordinary plastic ballpoints tend to disintegrate around the tip once it
 hits a hard target (e.g. bone).  Pencils are, more or less, on the same
category as plastic ballpoints.

More pricey heavy pens such as Cross would probably be the best option.

Choose one with a rotating mechanism though.  Those with spring mechanisms
tend to break in the middle upon hard contact.
