However I'm keen to learn more about general FMA unarmed techniques - anyone able to point me towards some decent reference information on this? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Personally I like the "purple haze" smoke on stage.... The first time we ran a double stick work out in class, we had a rule, drop one do 5 pushups, drop one and hit someone do 20 pushups (and apologize) pretty much the first couple of weeks I ran a pushups class. I learned to count in different languages to make the pushups more fun? However it did come together, a 6 foot person becomes a 10 foot wide person with sticks! -Lance --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 18:09:06 -0700 (PDT) From: Tanare Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Kalis Ilustrisimo & unarmed techniques To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hey Trent, For FMA unarmed techniques it's pretty much how you learn with the sticks it is base in unarmed situations. Most of Kali or Pekiti Tirsia they do the shivel technique or fanning their sticks and it's complicated to relate for unarmed situations. Try getting some books or videos on Rey Galang from Bakbakan; he's also a student of Grandmaster Antonio Ilustrisimo from the Kali Ilustrisimo System. Not only he's a Senior Master Instructor but he has also written books on techniques and history about FMA. We have a body sculpt class in our school; and by incorporating Eskrima, I feel we can generate an interest in the Filipino Martial Arts." Do as I do when the mood takes me: 1) Place CD of NWA's "Straight out of Compton" in the player. 2) Press *play*. 3) Avail yourself of two moderately heavy rattan sticks (10-12oz) 4) Proceed to Pekiti Tirsia Dirty Dozen warm-up (about 10 minutes) 5) Add figure of 8, forward and reverse as well as fluid attacks (see DB tapes) - about 5 minutes 6) Switch to a single stick. Proceed to DBMA "Coordinating stick and footwork" exercises and "Attacking blocks". maybe another 10 minutes. Do right and left. 7) Get a heavier stick or an iron bar. Proceed to power drills (DBMA tape 1) 8) If you still have energy and have not run out of the CD, grab a staff (I use hickory sledge hammer handle about 36" and close to 2 lb - anything longer takes out the lights in the garage) and proceed with the drills in "DBMA Staff". At this point I am usually knackered, but a younger and fitter person will probably then go on to the real training :-) Michael Koblic, Campbell River, BC Note: I have no financial or business arrangement with the DBMA or NWA, I just like their stuff. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Al Sardinas" To: Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 22:55:46 -0400 Subject: [Eskrima] Escribic; FMA Inhfluenced Fitness Class Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Regarding recent posts - I saw a demonstration of Escribic in Germany about two years ago - what an embarrassment. Czar Peralta's original question - "Does anyone have any fitness ideas or cardio exercises with the Escrima sticks that you can describe or show me? or are there any links to any websites that show the exercises in action? We have a body sculpt class in our school; and by incorporating Escrima, I feel we can generate an interest in the Filipino Martial Arts." No question is a bad question but Mr. Peralta's question drives me to think the following: What system is Mr. Peralta involved in? Who is his instructor? Is he an instructor? How long has he been training? Does he really know what the Filipino Martial Arts are? Generate an interest in the FMA on what level? How diluted will the final product be?
