Off the bat, the price sounds a little high but, without seeing it in real life, or at least seeing some very good pictures of it, it's impossible to give you any real idea of value. I suggest that you seek out some auction sites on the internet and see if you can spot any similar blades having been sold. That will give you some idea of price for that particular sword. I could tell right away that it was a Philippine sword even before he gave me some info on it. He said a filipina lady sold it to him and said it was her father's or grandfather's. The blade itself is about 20" long, with surface rust on the blade. The finger guard had some rust. It was brass colored. The handle is still in good condition. The blade curves downward with a little belly towards the end. The scabbard is leather. Good condition, but it looks like it's been in a garage & neglected. I know pictures are worth a thousand words, but I didn't have my digicam at the time. I have never seen one in this "good" condition in the states. Does anyone know what something like this is worth or what I should offer? Or point me in the right direction. I'll probably keep it and practice with it every once in awhile. I'm speculating it came when the philippine laborers came to hawaii. So maybe 20-60 years old? Anyway, any tips, ideas on what it's worth, offer price, anything? Thanks in advance, Jay --__--__-- Message: 2 Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Sword value Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2006 09:14:24 -0400 From: "Ken Borowiec" To: Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Doesn't a Kukri curve forward and get wider at the end? My friend had won one at a competition and it too was rusty and slightly dull. I was able to fix both by sharpening it and the putting a buffing wheel on a drill press. I started the drill put the buffing compound on the spinning fabric and buffed all the rust off. After to properly maintain a good blade oil needs to be put on it. There are so many it should be easy to find a good safe oil. I suggest oiling the handle as well so it does not dry out and crack. As for the price I suggest doing a search on the net for Pilipino blades, there are many sites for makers. Get an Idea from that and make the offer. Sorry I couldn't help more. The ones mentioned are good. They are on the windward side of the island. If he's on other parts of the island, feel free to give your brother-in-law my email and I can help him out.
