On a separate topic, I have often admired the dexterity of people who work with tools such as machetes and axes on a daily basis, and I doubt that the one hour per day practice I put in will actually bring me up to scratch with their familiarity with the blade. A sugarcane machete, however, cannot match the performance of indigenous Philippine fighting blades and is generally frowned upon as a fighting weapon. I personally haven't heard of any martial arts school in the sugarcane-growing areas of the Philippines (where I came from) who regularly trains on the use of a sugarcane machete. > -- __--__-- > > Message: 8 > Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2006 18:57:17 -0700 (PDT) > From: Karol Krauser > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Subject: [Eskrima] Machetes, Bolos, ect... > Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > > Hello all, > > I am currently traveling around central America and find that every > migrating worker from Nicaragua up to Guatemala has a Machete either in his > hand or strapped to his back. In 1978 I was in the jungles of Quintanoo Roo (eastern state of the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico) for 3 weeks living with a tribe of Mayan Indians. As Karol mentioned, these guys get frighteningly natural from clearing the jungle with their machetes to have land to plant their crops. (The children are quite good with sling shots too. Iguanas often became dinner after being dinged with a slingshotted rock from astonishing distances, but I digress , , ,) Any of these men would make an exceedingly dangerous adversary.
