Enriquez Asian Journal Meet Ariel Gonzales, Henry Cabillon, Josh Pueblos, and John Garcia. These four Filipino-Americans from the Bandalan Doce Pares Eskrima group based in Garden Grove, California will be representing the United States in the upcoming World Championship competition this July 2-7 at the Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida, where they will compete against fighters from 30 other countries for the title of World Champion. The four of them earned their spots for the World Championship competition when they recently competed during the U.S. National World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (WEKAF) stickfighting tournament in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They won 5 gold and 2 silver medals. Two hundred competitors from different parts of the U.S. took part in full contact stickfighting and forms competitions. Winning the WEKAF earned the four the honor of representing the U.S. to the World Championship competition. Ariel Gonzales "Since I was a kid I knew I was interested in martial sports. But due to the expensive lessons in the Philippines and U.S. I could only watch people practice," Ariel told the Asian Journal. "I was fascinated and in awe every time I see people dance and twirl with the sticks. I started training when my uncle Joe offered to teach eskrima classes in his backyard. It was an obsession from that moment on to learn as muchas I could. Now, because he was a great teacher who encouraged us to explore other arts, I'm learning boxing, kickboxing, jiujitsu, and the mental aspect of martial arts," he said. Ariel is the U.S. National Champion in the Men's Super Middleweight (155 - 161 lbs.) in Stickfighting and second place, Men's Single Stick Open forms. "As a student and competitor I want to be the best. It requires a huge amount of dedication, discipline, commitment, and sacrifice to improve yourself. Not only the above qualities apply in martial arts and competition but how we live our life in general, to live a life with principles such as integrity and the desire to better oneself and mankind. As an instructor, my students motivate me when I see them progress beyond levels they couldn't achieve before," according to Ariel. He said that he trains 6 to 8 weeks before the actual tournament, 3 times a week. Ariel explains that each session is broken down like lesson plans and that they train on specific techniques and strategies per day. "On game day I prefer to be solitary and listen to my iPod. I also visualize and meditate. Then, at one point, all students of Bandalan Doce Pares will gather together and say a prayer," he shares. His advice to those who aspire to be champions? "To achieve a goal, such as being a champion, losing weight, graduating from school, getting an A, etc., requires a change of lifestyle and maintain unwavering discipline. Sure, its too cold to train or that piece of pizza sounds good, or you can't miss your favorite TV show, but when you dig down in your heart and ask at that moment, 'Will this help me become a world champion? Get an A? Graduate? Lose 15 lbs?' Remember that the champion trained even when others went to sleep." Henry Cabillon Henry Cabillon is the U.S. National Champion in the Men's Light Cruiser Weight (162 - 168 lbs.) in Stickfighting and in the Men's Single Stick Traditional forms. This 30-year-old has been in this sport for close to 10 years. Henry says that he is motivated by competition. "I am a very competitive person and used the arts to push myself to be a top competitor in the sport. It's definitely an adrenaline rush. Also, FMA is so broad and varied, that there is so much to learn - it motivates me to challenge myself to learn and teach as much as I can," he said. Before competition, Henry follows his own set of rituals. "First of all, I use the same gear, fighting clothes, shoes, and routine during every tourney.I use the bathroom before every event, drink a secret 'energy' drink before fighting, pray and meditate during tournament day," he shared. "FMA and martial arts in general is a great way to get into shape and very addicting. It teaches self-defense, self-control and gives you confidence. With obesity being the number one cause of death in the U.S., more people need to be active, be it martial arts or otherwise," he said. "I am proud to finally be able to compete in the World Championships and represent the U.S. Team." --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
