But you forgot Comrade Joema (Jose Ma.Sison) waging war from the discos of the Netherlands. Jay de Leon www.filipinofightingartsintl.com bgdebuque wrote: The "Huks" (or officially, the HMB) is the military arm of the original Leninist line of the Philippine Communist movement. The NPA, on the other hand, is the military arm of the splinter Maoist line of the Philippine communist movement. During the Cold War, Leninist movements were generally supported by Moscow while Maoist movements were generally supported by Beijing. Sometimes, these two communist powers would bury their differences and would cooperate in jointly supporting a particular communist movement (like in the case of the Viet-Cong). There are remnants of the original HMB movement that are still operating in the Candaba swamp area. The NPA has been publicly denouncing them as either mere "bandits" (hhmm... Sakay and De Vega would probably be rolling in their graves) or "stooges" of the Philippine military. Consequently, the alleged leaders of the HMB are being routinely given a dose of "the people's justice" by the NPA. Of course, NPA operatives in the area have also been victims of HMB retaliation. There is also another splinter communist group in Negros Island - the RPA-ABB. Like the HMB, they have also been waging their own fratricidal war with the NPA. More than 100 years after the likes of the Bonifacio brothers and Antonio Luna died in the hands of fellow Filipinos, our primary expertise still lies in eliminating one another... =[:->] Even the muslim secessionist movement in the South has now splintered into several factions... Divide et empira... =[:->] _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list, 2300 members Eskrima@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 11 May 2006 23:19:01 +0100 From: Peter Lewis Organization: Worcester Eskrima To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Update on Motivation in the FMA Survey Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Guys It is a little early for results yet, but certainly of the 194 participants to date (6 more please!!!) only 5% are female. Could this be that women don't train, don't surf forums, or simply that men need the FMA to defend against them? :-D :-D :-D So far approximately 62% are very motivated by self-protection, but it is the more intrinsic aspects that really motivate participants. over 75% are motivated by acquiring deeping knowledge and understanding, and similar figures are shown for mastery of techniques, personal growth and helping others to grow. What I find very interesting is that most martial arts, as taught in the West, are driven by belts, certificates, trophies and status. The current survey indicates that these are the least motivational factors, which could be why some research (Gabelhouse) suggests that 86% of people who start training in martial arts quit. Often because of lost interest, poor curriculum, or instructor ability. I'll keep you posted as the analysis progresses.
