IMHO solving the second problem would address the first one. An example: Egos are not exclusive to MA teaching. I recall attending an ACLS course in city I will not mention. We were taught by a group of paramedics - 3 men and one woman. The course started with lectures. The style of the three men lecturing was best described as "mine is bigger than yours". After listening to this for 2 hours, when it came to the small group seminars I made damn sure I was in the woman's group. She was no less knowledgeable but way less irritating. The (very few) ranking women I met in martial arts, Filipino or otherwise, were all very competent. They were often tiny and clearly the power was not there to compete head to head with an average man. Yet their technical skills were often superior and they had a good understanding which they were able to share in a manner that was confident yet not overbearing. But how many men are out there who have a difficulty learning from a woman? BTW it was a woman driving instructor who got me through my driving test. The first two were men and failed miserably (I am sure it was their fault, not mine :-) The funniest thing was that when the driving school allocated her to me they were awfully evasive about her gender. I have to assume that other students refused to have a woman as an instructor... Anyway I do agree that there is only so much you can take of some things and one has to draw the line some where. There are probably plenty of ranges around with less jerks. Galang, Peter Gow --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Sun, 14 May 2006 16:14:04 -0700 (PDT) From: jay de leon Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Re: Is this saying? part three To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Marc: The word screed even makes it more general. So I will answer as generally as I can. If you mean the author is bigoted against Filipino-Chinese, or his personal views are, I assure you he is not and they are not. The author, Manuel Tiangha, is of Chinese descent. If you mean the views he presents in the email, whether they are originally his or somebody else, are bigoted, that is a different question. I will try to be brief. The Chinese question is a complex, convoluted issue in Philippine history and economics. As somebody mentioned, the Chinese have been part of the Filipino history and culture since the time of LImahong. The Chinese have been coming and settling in droves in the Philippines since that time. Jose Rizal was of Chinese descent. One of the Philippine problems even today is a Chinese illegal immigration problem (called overstaying in the Philippines). The other side of the coin is that many of these Filipino-Chinese (sometimes called tsinoys, short for chinese and pinoy) have become extremely wealthy and powerful. As Tiangha points out, many of them were merchants in the first place. There is a current breed of tsinoys now called taipans, extremely wealthy (up there with Bill Gates) with a lot of economic clout. I am sure many of them came to their wealth through hard, honest work. But there are a handful of tsinoys who became millionaires, and then exploited and became beneficiaries of the corrupt Filipino political and business system. Let me remind you this is basically an economic discussion. Tiangha and many luxids and myself basically agree on what the problem is in the Philippines. The crooked tsinoys exacerbate this problem. The disagreement with us is what the solution is. Are filipinos bigoted against tsinoys, on the basis of their ethnicity, religion, culture, etc.? My personal take is, generally no. They might get envious of their material success. Many filipinos have similar personal stories about tsinoys. I will tell you mine briefly to give you an idea. One of my best friends and business associates in college was a tsinoy named George G. He was still in college, but he was one of his father's salesmen. By the time I met him, his family was worth millions (dollars, not pesos), with several businesses and manufacturing plants in Taiwan. But he told me how they became millionaires. His grandfather came on a boat to the Philippines with nothing but the shirt on his back. He started his business by picking up bent nails (pako) in construction sites in Manila. Then he would go home and pound the nails to get them straight again. Then he resold the straightened nails. And that is how he built his multi-million dollar empire. I met this grandfather. He still spoke tagalog with a sing-song chinese accent. Would I be bigoted against a man like that? Definitely not. He had my respect and admiration. Would the average filipino be bigoted against an honest businessman like that? I do not think so. The problem is, how come the filipino was not as industrious, creative, forward-looking, etc., etc.. (Remember Gat Puno Abon mentioning Juan Tamad, or John Lazy?)
