In my mind, so i may be wrong, Hughes is smaller so will have to come into Royce rather than vica versa. Royce needs to have Matt on his back so i would look to see Royce clinch and takedown to take the mount. Like the criminals are going to be coming forward and handing in their blades... they wish! It's total and utter bollocks, carried out as some kind of political stunt to make it look like they (the authorities, Police, etc.,) are doing something about knife-related crime. If you lay a knife on the ground, it is incapable of jumping up and slashing or stabbing someone... in the same way that a housebrick can't club the brains out of a dumb politician all on its own. I couldn't believe the story in the Daily Mail yesterday (see: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/dmsearch/overture.html?in_page_id=711&in_ov erture_ua=cat&in_start_number=0&in_query=knife+amnesty&siteOr=) I was especially amazed by the comment: "...very glad it is off the streets..." like the bloody thing ever was "on the streets". It's not the kind of thing you could slip in your back pocket!... and also the comment by some so-called 'martial arts expert': "It's an extremely dangerous weapon". Yes, and so is a hedging bill or axe in The story as it appeared: "Lethal Star Trek blade seized in knives amnesty 25th May 2006 "Force for evil: inspector Mac McGarry with the blade, believed to be a lethal Star Trek replica. "This horrifying five-foot weapon has been recovered by police during a knife amnesty. (Photos: See more knives from the amnesty) "The three-handled sword with a blade at either end, designed to be swung like a paddle, shocked officers who took custody of it. "They are using it to publicise a five-week amnesty during which they hope around 30,000 weapons will be handed in, mainly from youngsters. "A spokesman for police in Gloucester, where it was surrendered, said: "It is a particularly nasty weapon that can, literally, take someone's head off. We are very glad it is off the streets and we want more weapons handed in." "The blade is believed to be a stainless-steel copy of a Klingon weapon used in the science fiction series Star Trek. "It's an extremely dangerous weapon," said a martial arts expert last night. "Other blades surrendered so far include lock-blade flick knives, exotic swords and a 'swordfish jaw' weapon with razor-sharp teeth. "The Home Office amnesty is in response to a series of attacks in recent weeks which have claimed the lives of volunteer policewoman Nisha Patel-Nasri and 15-year-old schoolboy Kiyan Prince. Safety campaigners and police say it does not go far enough. They are demanding far tougher sentences than the current maximum of two years for carrying a knife. "Under pressure in the Commons yesterday, the Prime Minister said a minimum could be introduced because at present thugs can escape with only a caution. "Mr Blair said: "We are giving urgent consideration not just to banning a whole series of knives but also making sure that there is some minimum sentence." "The widow of murdered headteacher Philip Lawrence said yesterday the amnesty on its own will not work. "Frances Lawrence, whose husband was killed at the gates of his school in north London in 1995, said three different ministers have been in charge of crime in the past three weeks and information from the Home Office is confusing. "Mrs Lawrence said: "There is an anomaly between the legislation for knife crime and gun crime, where gun crime carries much stiffer penalties. ""We all know a knife can kill just as easily as a gun so there is a great anomaly there. A knife amnesty on its own won't be a solution." The following paragraph was unfinished. It should've read: "It's an extremely dangerous weapon". Yes, and so is a hedging bill or axe in the wrong (or right) hands! Ollie Batts Cambridge Academy of Martial Arts® http://www.cambridgemartialarts.com --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Aaron Alejandro" To: Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Re: Jihad Date: Fri, 26 May 2006 08:08:58 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Tuhon McGrath, I've been reading and watching the various posts on escrima digest as it relates to "jihad." Interesting, because I'm not sure how it really relates to martial arts or escrima particularly -- guess it keeps us all reading and watching to see what's next. However, out of great respect to you, your accomplishments and skill as a martial artist, I have chosen to offer my perspective with some tie to martial arts. Thank you for sharing your writings and a scholars definition of "jihad". As educated readers, both in American and abroad, I suspect we can appreciate the written, intended and ideological approach to "jihad." I don't know that underdeveloped or third world countries have the same educated or reasoned perspective. Unfortunately, like any extremist organization, I believe the intent of the current "jihad" is better represented by the actions that carry out a more lethal form of cleansing to reach a better place and/or to have a more moral society. Is this struggle for a better place through one form of religion/belief a genocide, a cleansing, a means to an end? In a martial arts sense, I believe we all train to be prepared. Unfortunately, many terrorist attacks are simply "sucker punches." They attack the innocent in an effort to command attention and a perceived dominant position. No training in any escrima style is going to be of much assistance from an IED attack, chemical/biological attack, or other attack examples those who practice their form of "jihad" represent. Discussions of "jihad" on this form can help us be prepared by broadening our awareness and understanding. The writings and definition you shared have afforded us an opportunity to learn and see another perspective -- and you have done so by the creditentials you bring to the forum. So again with much respect thank you for sharing. I don't know that I personally know any Muslims, Islamic or practitioners of a kinder/gentler "jihad." I do, however, watch the news, have witnessed video clips and watched those who carry out their "jihad" with a lethal intent. Misguided? Maybe, but reports of elementary education in some countries speak to a "jihad" much more extreme and violent than a "peaceful" attempt for a strong moral and social fabric. Your post and supplement information provided is appreciated and insightful. Just my opinion and observation of "jihad" as I've seen it. Coinciding with the worldwide celebration of the founding of the Olympic movement, the festival will rival the SEA Games in terms of participation, with more than 7,000 athletes competing in 27 sports disciplines in the inaugural event. Although it will showcase the best talents from the grassroots level, elite athletes are also expected to compete in the event that is part of the country's celebrations of the 110th founding anniversary of the World Olympic Movement. National athletes would use the event as part of their preparations for the coming Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, from December 1 to 15. "Apart from sustaining the youth's interest in sports after our successful hosting of the SEA Games, the Olympic Festival will serve as part of the training of our potential participants to the Doha Games and the Beijing Olympics. We may even discover other potential champions during the Festival," said POC president Jose Cojuangco Jr. Joining Cojuangco during the event's launch at the Milky Way in Makati City were POC chairman Robert Aventajado, Mayor Bambol Tolentino of Tagaytay City, Nueva Ecija Board Member Edward Joson and Gov. Imelda Quibranza-Dimaporo of Lanao del Norte. Sports calendared in the event are athletics, archery, aquatics (swimming and diving), arnis, basketball, football, gymnastics, equestrian, billiards and snooker, muay, badminton, boxing, fencing, lawn tennis, wrestling, chess, bowling, golf, sepak takraw, weightlifting, tae kwon do, wushu, and sports climbing. "This is part of our effort to create sports awareness and at the same time help our local and sports officials in their grassroots sports promotion," said Cojuangco, who also heads the equestrian association. "This is a big deal for all of us because what we have done here is the product of hard work, cooperation, understanding and unity among sports and local officials," the former Tarlac congressman added. Some of the venues hosting the festival are Palayan City in Nueva Ecija; Los Baños, Laguna; Tubod, Lanao del Norte; and the cities of Taguig, Marikina, Quezon City, Antipolo, Pasig, and Manila. The Olympic Festival is patterned after Australia's national games, which also synchronizes hosting of sporting events annually, Cojuangco said. He added that the festival also hopes to underscore the difference between the POC, a private entity, and the government's Philippine Sports Commission, and to promote the Olympic ideals of friendship, solidarity and fair play. Meanwhile, Aventajado, the silver-haired Philippine Tae Kwon Do Association chief, said the event would sustain the momentum of the successful campaign of Filipino athletes in last year's Southeast Asian Games, in which the country won the overall championship for the first time. "This will be a big help for our athletes to sustain their momentum from the SEAG, and would also serve as a training ground for the Asian Games-bound athletes," said Aventejado, who also chairs the festival's executive committee. Cojuangco appointed athletics chief Go Teng Kok as the festival's vice chairman to assist Aventajado, with swimming head Mark Joseph as the event's secretary-general. The traditional Olympic Day Fun Run, which used to be the only activity staged in celebrating the Olympics' founding anniversary, will still be held, only this time it will serve to kick off the festivities. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
