Three ladies fought in a Dog Brother Gathering in November 2004. They swung sticks, punched, kicked and grappled. The fights were just as eventful as those for guys as each woman had considerable experience, though the crowd reaction was amplified. http://www.dogbrothers.com/gallery/Nov04/res47794 >From left to right: Sheri, , Linda, Veruska (Please correct my spelling) Gints --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Tue, 30 May 2006 03:29:07 -0700 (Pacific Standard Time) From: "Todd Ellner" To: Subject: [Eskrima] Re: UFC for Women Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Progressive feminist-friendly as I am I've got to admit that the idea of men fighting women in MMA bouts strikes me as just plain wrong on many emotional levels. Men fighting men? Cool. Women fighting women? Great, as long as it doesn't turn into some sort of sick soft-core porn. Men trying to beat the hell out of women for entertainment? I just can't handle it. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Tue, 30 May 2006 12:45:21 +0100 (BST) From: Jon Broster Subject: Re: [Eskrima] UFC for Women To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi, Right after the UFC first came out and Rickson had a couple of fights in Japan billed as Vale Tudo, there were a couple of 1 off women's events in Japan. They were hosted by pro-wrestling groups, but the fights looked real enough to me (although I do remember seeing a double knock-out, followed by Rocky-style climbing up the ropes to regain your feet, in the elimination to fill the eighth spot in the draw!!) In one event (U-Top I think) the 2 finalists were a Dutch Thai boxer at around 130 lbs and a Russian judo player at around 280 lbs. After a few minutes of soaking up kicks the Russian grabbed the other, dumped her and smothered her onto submission. All harmless fun I guess. When the UFC started in 1993, it was a case of which style was better or best. During those times BJJ ruled supreme. Nowadays, it's more about the fighters because they have been more open to both striking and grappling. Even the once mighty guard is easily pitted with the ground and pound of wrestlers. MMAers are exhausting available skills and means to stay on top of their game. 1@msfencing.org wrote: > MMA is really evolving. What do y'all attribute this to? In what way has it evolved? Blessings, Rez "Standing guard on old, forgotten roads, that no one travels anymore." Hook n Shoot has been a great promoter for all the up and coming men. In fact many great competitors we see today started in this show. The Shooto Organization even used to use them as a pool for new up and comers and they did an all women's show that was pretty good. I would have to agree though, getting the right opponents is hard. There are many women that dominate at their weight class in these comps. We've even taken several ladies in to compete and for their first fight they almost always fought someone else with 3-10 fights already under them. I think it would be good to have a UFC division and even show case one or two women fights on the card with the men. But we definitely got to build a pool of more women fighters. Maybe a new TUF (the ultimate fighter) show could be made to bring more women in and expose the men to the idea? 'King of the Cage' has been putting on women's fights for years now, and there is a promotion in Japan called 'Smackgirl' that is gaining some prestige. I'm not sure if there are any plans by the UFC to have such bouts in the future, but I would urge you to send a letter or e-mail to Dana White to let him know that the interest is out there. Personally, I'm not against this type of fighting, but I really don't enjoy watching it either. I don't care for women's boxing either. The strange thing is that I can't tell you why. Just something about seeing two women beat on each other. Doesn't do a thing for me even if there are bikinis and jello involved. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Marc Denny" To: Date: Tue, 30 May 2006 09:04:48 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] Women in DB Gatherings Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Woof All: > Subject: Re: [Eskrima] UFC for Women > FMA wise, do the dog brother Gatherings or any other full contact > groups have women coming through? > -- > Pat Davies Somewhere in the late 90s we had our first fight between two women, known in our lore as "the Catfight". Since then we sometimes have had fights between women, including one Gathering about 2 years ago where we had three women fight each other, but usually the fights are men only. For example our next Gathering is coming up on June 25. (Which reminds me-- time to get out the invitation!!!) We already have 24 registered fighters. No women have approached us yet. Any interested for this time around should please express an interest on our forum: http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=1&sid=e0def31746c85dff833afbc96f1d544b The idea of women fighting men at our Gatherings has been raised occasionally, but frankly I regard this as a poor idea. For a woman who wishes to test herself at this level, my suggestion is to do it in backyard contexts. For example Linda of C-Baltic Dog's clan of the DBs (SF Bay area) scraps well with the men of her group in the garage, but at the Gatherings fights with other women. For the record, she wanted to fight men too, but , , , my house, my rules :-) The Adventure continues, Crafty Dog --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Alex Ercia" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 30 May 2006 11:24:17 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] KOMBATAN SEMINAR ON JUNE 25,2006 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Everyone!
