Presented by the Oceanview Pavilion and Kasiyahan Entertainment from today through Sunday, the expo will include a variety of activities including film screenings, art exhibitions, traditional dances, cultural displays, food vendors, lectures and educational workshops. As a first-generation Filipino-American artist born and raised in Oxnard, Christine Morla said she feels a strong cultural responsibility to participate in the event. "The expo allows us to promote Filipino cultural awareness, educate our youth, and to let the generations before us know that it is important for us to continue to share our stories." The event will begin with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. for the art exhibition, featuring work by artists Alvin P. Gregorio, Jon Austria, Ely Neri, Morla and others. Morla's work draws on imagery from her own personal family albums as well as Filipino historical and political imagery to create art that is inspired by crafts in the Philippines. Three films will be screened from 6 to 10 p.m. after the reception, including Ray Cuerdo's "Small Voices," an inspirational story about breaking the cycle of poverty and learning to dream. A $5 donation is required. Saturday will feature cultural experiences including a Filipino martial arts demonstration conducted by Mount San Antonio College Filipino Martial Arts group at 2 p.m. The group is directed by Oxnard-born Steve Del Castillo, who will show audiences eskrima, kali, arnis and kickboxing. >From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. visitors will see an import auto show sponsored by Ventura's High End Performance as well as an orchid display in the Streamside Terrace. The event will end with Kasiyahan Sayawan Night, an evening of dancing from 7 to 11:30 p.m. A $10 donation is required. Sunday's lineup will include an all-age fashion show from 2 to 3 p.m. presenting both modern and traditional styles created by young designers. Other events scheduled for the expo include various dance and singing performances, youth activities, Filipino sports and games, and more. The expo will include entertainment by the Non-Stop Dance Crew, Channel Islands High School dance teams, 2005 Filipino Idol winner Eli Gonzalez, among others. The Oceanview Pavilion is at 575 E. Surfside Drive, Port Hueneme. For more information, visit the expo's Web site at http://www.freewebs.com/facexpo2006/index.htm, or contact Charleen Morla at 236-1309. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Frank Stevens" To: Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2006 12:40:23 -0400 Subject: [Eskrima] Training with Cacoy! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net 2 weeks ago I got a chance to meet and train with the Grandmaster. It was a small, private seminar put together by my instructor Eric Smith. A few of our students along with Prof. Walt Hartwich and a few of his students from Indiana. There was 11 of us total. It was nice to have the direct one on one interaction. A great time was had by all. I look forward to seeing him again. Frank Stevens -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Before Cacoy starting doing seminars about every weekend he used to teach in his backyard here in San Jose. I got to work with him about every weekend for a couple of summers (he spents ~half the year in San Jose and about half back home in Cebu City). Some days there would only be Cacoy and me! What a kick! It was amazing to get to train 1-on-1 with a grandmaster of his caliber, esp on such a frequent basis. Memories that I will never ever forget. I was fortunate enough to get to spend some time on the training floor one on one with GM Canete about 7 or 8 years ago. He showed me so much in the 45-60 minutes that it was amazing. I've been the recipient lots of one on one time with Sifu Al Dacascos (my Sifu) as well as with Guru John Daniels. These increadible martial artists are the major influences in my martial arts life. Check yoru area here : http://www.geraldoatlarge.com/where-to-watch.php?stateCode=CA Geraldo Rivera decided to do a show on geeks and sparring and cold-called my group. I hope the spin isn't too crazy. In the hours of interviews, we all credited our martial arts teachers by name and provided largely sane responses. We are average fighters with a good heart for self-defense training. This story is about showing the world why we enjoy self-defense training and the comraderie of the group. Some are Kajukenbo students of Master Rich Lewis and Sigung John Bono. Others are students of Inayan Eskrima and many other SF Bay Area groups, as well as players at the Dog Brother Gatherings. Everyone is just testing the material of their teachers outside of the regular class. I hope we don't embarrass them. http://www.geraldoatlarge.com/blog.php?where_param=blog_id&blog_id=438 http://www.geraldoatlarge.com/blog.php?where_param=blog_id&blog_id=437&PHPSESSID=253e2d65c6dcfc9e3651490edacccb0e If you miss the show, check their video archives. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
