Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Greetings, all... You know, I know it's important to teach a wide variety of techniques... And I also know that in demos / rank evaluations, etc., you often show something that just "looks cool". But, the last defense in this video http://www.tmi-selfdefense.com/vids/set3/6.mov had me wondering. I have very limited experience in the martial arts, having done this for only seven years, but strictly speaking, I don't usually consider a succession of three spinning / turning kicks, followed by a punch, without making any effort to trap the knife or the arm / hand holding it, as something I would put in the "Good Idea" checkbox... Looked cool though... I think I'll leave the spinning crescent kick to the attacker's arm out of my knife defense arsenal :) **bows** - Bert Edens Springdale, Arkansas --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Mon, 5 Jun 2006 14:05:33 -0700 From: "Lawrence, Marc J." What do they have in common? Now, these two FMA systems, created by the legendary Presas Grandmasters, Remy and Ernesto, will be brought together under one roof. Well, at least for the one day while the seminar is on. (smile) And they will come together again (along with all the other major FMA systems) under one roof when the FMA Museum is built in the Philippines, but I digress... Many of those who came to our last Summer Camp in 2003 have repeatedly asked when we are going to do one again - so we've decided to do so this year! On offer, will be: Steven Benitez: Steven and his team of Indonesian Silat practitioners are coming back again due to very popular demand. If you've never seen Silat, or trained with Steven before, then you are in for the treat of a lifetime! Steven is also a regular Columnist in Martial Arts Illustrated magazine. Mo' (Devil's Advocate) Teague: Mo's major strength is his experience and knowledge of what functions for real, in the street. So his 'Functional JKD' just about sums up what it is he does best. Mo' is also coming back again as there were so many people who just didn't believe the experience the first time around. If you came last time you'll know what I mean! ;o) Gerhard Schmitt: Gerhard, although new to the Academy, is fairly well-known to us. He is one of Germany's leading exponents in Ju Jutsu and Jiu-Jitsu, as well as having teaching certificates in a number of other martial arts. He also speaks about 12 different languages, and is a very funny guy too. Ollie Batts: As CAMA's resident Senior Instructor, I'll endeavour to come up with something a bit different again - just to keep everyone on their toes! Now with well over 30 years experience behind me, I should be able to provide some interesting and useful (if not entertaining) material for most people to enjoy. Four high-level instructors, all brought together in one place, for you to train with, and at a price you'd be hard-pushed to find anywhere else. Try not to miss it! Please e-mail me for a flier or for further information: ollie@cama.org.uk Ollie Batts Director & Senior Instructor Cambridge Academy of Martial Arts® http://www.cambridgemartialarts.com --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Wed, 7 Jun 2006 18:07:44 -0700 (PDT) From: Dave Wong Subject: Re: [Eskrima] re: Knife used in self-defense To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net You should have seen some of the replies on one popular knives internet forum. They said fighting knives had to be at least of a certain length and made wth SUPER steel. Anything less won't do. Marc MacYoung wrote: > From: bgdebuque > I guess a pocket knife in hand is worth much much more than a dozen Bowies > in the closet... I'm often asked by wanna-be knife fighters "What's the best knife for fighting?" My answer is always "The one in your hand when you need it" It's scary how often in these marketing/advertising/agenda driven days of tactical folders, ultimate fighting styles and tactical equipment that answer goes flying right over their pointy little heads M _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list, 2300 members Eskrima@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? In any case I wanted to extend an invitation to anyone in the NY area to join us in a seminar. This will be a fairly small and friendly gathering hence participants will get more personalized instruction than the typical seminar setting. Please feel free to email me personally with any questions. Seminar Notice for Saturday, June 17th from 12-4PM Location: CAP21 18 West 18th Street (between 5th and 6th avenue) 6th floor New York, NY 10011 Cost: $50 This is an open invitation to participate in a Kombatan Arnis seminar with Master Shelley Millspaugh. Master Shelley has been with the International Philippine Martial Arts Federation (IPMAF) since 1992, and has spent extensive time training in the Philippines with Grandmaster Presas and his son, Ernesto Jr. He moved to the Philippines in 1996 to train at the Headquarters in Manila for 6 months. In 2001, Guro Shelley was granted 'Master Instructor of the Year' by the WORLD HEAD OF FAMILY SOKESHIP COUNCIL in Orlando, Florida. In 2006, Guro Shelley was promoted to Lakan Walo (8th Degree), Senior Master, for his continued efforts in the promotion of Kombatan Arnis and the Filipino Martial Arts. He is currently the highest ranking teacher in the US. Shelley has not yet told me what the format of the seminar will be, but at expect to see some Doble Baston, Solo Baston, and Espada y Daga, and possibly Mano Mano or Dulo-Dulo as well. I encourage you to learn more about the art, Grandmaster Ernesto Presas, and Master Shelley by visiting the links below. www.presas.org – Kombatan's official website www.kombatankc.com – Webesite for Shelley's school in Kansas City. for further questions, please contact me via personal message or kombatannyc@yahoo.com.
