Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Pat, it seems to me that we're both on the same boat, both intent on getting to the same destination, but somehow our rowing styles are clashing. Instead of moving forward, the boat seems either to be veering from left to right, or it's going round and round in circles. Let me put things right here. I'll stop rowing for a while. I'll take a nap, although I do in fact sleep very well thanks. I also apologise for bringing up the 'F' word in the first place, and for repeating the sorry tale of the T-shirt. Incidentally, you may or may not know this but, Salem Assli, on page 256 of his 352 page book 'Jeet Kune Do Toutes Les Techniques De Bruce Lee' (written in French) has also listed a number of different fighting disciplines. That list also includes 'Boxing'. Alongside is written: 'États-Unis'. Small point maybe, but historically incorrect. And if you can get something as basic as that wrong... Sorry, I'll leave it! Just so that there is absolutely no misunderstanding at all: The above is in no way meant to be taken as, flippant, sarcastic, sanctimonious, or anything else you (or anyone else) might suspect it of being. Quite how the initial subject of me simply trying to inform people about our forthcoming Summer Camp has degenerated into something of a spat, I fail to comprehend, or understand. I also regret the fact and wish I hadn't bothered to post in the first place. And just so there is no further misunderstanding: I have the utmost respect for Guru Inosanto, and what he has done for the world of martial arts. I'm gone. By all means take him to task. Re: F word. Its not your issue and i didnt take you to task but asked a general question and even changed the subject. If you took slight then that was your misinterpretation, not mine. None was intended to you. Re Summer Camp: Sounds excellent and proabbly brought more attention to it (humour intended). Seriously - does sound good. Re going: i recently asked for your input which encouraged you back onto this list. So i have no desire to see you leave or be p*ssed off. However, i discussed a simple matter and if you want to interpret that as personal insult then you do so to satisy your own reasons and not mine, because none were intended. Now pick up your toys and put them back in the pram and lets get back to playing (again humour intended) On 6/15/06, Ollie Batts wrote: > > ...I also regret the fact and wish I hadn't bothered > to post in the first place. > .... > > I'm gone. > > > Ollie Batts still here -- Pat Davies www.amag.org.uk --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2006 06:41:30 -0700 From: "Lawrence, Marc J." To: Subject: [Eskrima] Tire Bags and Training for FMA Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Tire Bags and Training I have talked to relatives in the P.I. and Hawaii about tire bags and training. Nobody had every had any injuries when using Rattan or Bamboo sticks, but using hard wood stick they had seen this. The mechanics of a palm wood (Rattan) or Grass/Cane woods (Bamboo)has give or flex as they make contact when striking but hardwoods only slightly in comparison. When I construct tire bags I use 15 inch automotive tires that worn out. Look at the sidewalls so they flex. These worn out tire have more give. I also have to years kicked and punched these tire bags as my heavy bag. My hands, wrists and shoulders are still fine. I wear a pair of heavy padded work gloves for bagging. I have developed two designs for tire bags and I have made one is 9 tire-6 foot 2 inch bag and the other is six tire 5 foot 8 inch bag. For construction information see my article and Jay Deleon's article at http://www.filipinomartialartsmuseum.com/Articles/lawrence/eskrima_tire- bag.html http://www.filipinomartialartsmuseum.com/Articles/deleon/martial_arts/fm a_training-equipment.html If you wish to purchase a Tire Bag Frame there is Filipino Martial Artist who sells these out of the San Fernando, Ca. area. Contact him at Earlwin Famor [Earlwin@CompuServe.Com]. He is charging 120.00 US dollars. Shipping is for 50 pounds weight. If you are in the P.I. Contact KRIM in Cebu City. You have to provide your own tires. They figured he would just get himself into big trouble if they taught him how to properly use a blade. He has a little girl student who needs crutches. Ever since she started she has been getting stronger and her mother says she doesn't use the crutches as much as well as her doctor saw an improvement himself. Just thought I'd add that because I see it as a great example of how MA helps kids even with disabilities. Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2006 14:09:11 -0400 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net What do you consider light enough? With WMA making a major resurgence over the last decade there are a LOT of sword vendors out there depending on your needs and price range. Given that your average longsword ways in at around 3.5 pounds I'm not sure what your looking for as far as weight. Couple of websites to checkout: www.albion-swords.com - likely a bit pricey. Single hand swords are ~30 inches (give or take) and weigh in at around 2.5lbs. www.angustrimdirect.com - I'm a big fan of Gus' work. Fine, fine looking swords and hold up to a good bit of abuse. Hard to be more specific without knowing what weight your shooting for and price range. -steve > Hi all, > Maybe I am not looking at the right websites but can someone > recommend a site that carries short swords under 30" that are > suitable for more finess than big cuts...I have not found anything on > the market that is light enough for me, or maybe I must just grow > stronger, any input on this would be appreciated... > > _________________________________________________________________ > FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar - get it now! > http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/ > _______________________________________________ > Eskrima mailing list, 2300 members > Eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource > Standard disclaimers apply > http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima --__--__-- Message: 11 Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2006 11:17:10 -0700 (GMT-07:00) From: Q To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Guro Ted Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net >I used to spar with Guro Ted and one of his sisters all the time, and >besides the great stickwork, I REALLY remember their great footwork. >They were particular aboutfootwork and stickwork. We drilled it all the >time. When Iwould start thinking about "When are we going to hit," >wefound that avoiding the hit was so muchbetter. We didn't >---Jerry Caeta, Bakersfield, California, USA Jerry, I trained in and around and with Guro Ted before he was even an escrimador back in the early '70's. He was my senior. I was a flunky in the corner of the gym. He had the funkiest bodymechanics and really moved for a heavy man right up to his last day. He had the uncanny ability to "appear" off balance but yet maintain a stable base to deliver "telling" shots. My FMA is so mixed up I do not know if what he had was a Lukay Lukay family method or just in the FMA but after many years I find those techniques/entries, and training methods to be among the best to sneak in some killer shots. Isn't it amazing how "not hitting" can make your "hitting" better. Thanks for the post..it brought back great memories. Regards, Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S.
