When I was in grade school and high school in the Philippines, it was not uncommon to challenge or get challenged this way, "Sport tayo?" It meant bare knuckles, boxing rules (no karate, kicking, etc.) but no animosity after the fight. Most of the time, the arrangement worked out. Sometimes, it led to bigger fights, no longer "sport." Jay de Leon www.filipnomartialartsmuseum.com Ollie Batts wrote: Thanks Peter. My post only related to early English Bareknuckle Pugilism and Boxing, and any rules associated with such. The first newspaper report of a Bare Knuckle bout appeared in the Protestant Mercury January 1681. That was between the Duke of Albemarle's Footman and a Butcher. The Butcher was said to have won. Prior to that, Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary, on 5th August 1660, that he had watched 'with enthusiasm' a 'fray' [a fight] at Westminster Stairs between a Thames waterman [a boatman - usually] and a Dutchman, which had 'made good sport'. Earlier still, in 1637, a collection of poems was published entitled: Annalia Dubrensia: Upon the yeerely celebration of Mr Robert Dovers Olimpic Games upon Cotswold-Hills, stating that:- "The warrelike Champion with his powerful fists, Contended for the Prize, as in our lists [fields of combat],..." Those Games were revived again in relatively recent times and still go on each year. Just in case anyone is interested in attending. And even earlier than that, John Bull (who lived from 1562 - 1628) wrote: "An Englishman will take his part, With courage prime and noble heart; Either forgive, or resent offence - And bang-up [first class] in his own defence. No sword or dagger - nor deadly list [fight to the death] - And rise or fall but by his fist! The battle o'er - all make amends, By shaking hands, becoming friends." Some 400 years later, it's a shame we couldn't all try to live by that kind of tenet. And should we ever need to 'solve a quarrel', to do it using the 'Good Old English method' and, after it's over, simply shake hands and become friends again. Pugil From: "Peter Gow" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2006 00:44:04 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Boxing Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Ollie, Thanks for that. If you look further back in history than what you have described, you will see that there were some different forms of pugilism where the participants would nominate the body parts that were to be used in the contest, Eg: Upper body only, feet and hands, full body. It is rather intersting to see how similiar those contests and the period of boxing would have been to MA. I like the middle as the fibers in the rattan will shrink as they are heated, hold the stick about 8 to 10 inches above highest flame rotating stick slowly as the skin turns brown like a marsh mellow move the flame further up the stick. Be careful not to scorch the stick as this will break down the fibers, You will see puffing out the end of the stick, this is normal, also be careful as the rattan will hold heat for a long time. I like to soak the whole stick in PVC pipe and linseed oil for about a month before tempering, then put a torch to squeeze excess oil out then let drain in the sun for 2 weeks then hheat temper. This makes a very durable rattan stick and will ad weigh too. ----------------------------------------- CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE: This electronic message contains information which may be legally confidential and/or privileged and does not in any case represent a firm ENERGY COMMODITY bid or offer relating thereto which binds the sender without an additional express written confirmation to that effect.
