Panantukan & Western Boxing (eric.taimanglo@us.army.mil) --__--__-- Message: 1 From: To: eskrima@martialartsresource.com Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2006 16:03:41 +0400 Subject: [Eskrima] Panantukan & Western Boxing Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I read an online article by Lilia Inosanto Howe about how FMA may have influenced Western boxing. I believe you can see it at www.stickgrappler.com. I have also seen a video with Guro Dan explaining how siniwali and pakal knife gripping transitioned into the modern boxing guard methods today. He basically got 2 baston, chambered one under one arm, the other right above it (your starting position for redonda), then dropped the sticks... lo and behold, a boxer's guard, one hand down, one up. He again took 2 baston, one chambered at the right shoulder, the other resting on the right bicep... upon releasing the sticks, boom... another boxer type guard, both hands up. He then proceeded to illustrate the daga contra daga mechanics, which required one to be up on the balls of the feet, constantly moving in a catlike way, and discussed how sayaw (of the Indonesian/Malay influenced variety), with its changes in head and body level, could have transferred over to what we see today as b obbing and weaving. While it is possible that western boxers fighting in the PI could have picked up on this stuff, I personally believe that the similarities are not a case of whether "this influenced that", but a case of human ingenuity and common sense applied to fighting. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
