There really is a number of great people to train with there. JD and Ajarn Wilson I cannot recommend high enough....but I'm biased...being that I trained with them for a long time. Also, There is a Pekiti-Tirsia instructor by the name of Steven Slomkowski who moved there after I moved away. You can find his contact info on the PT-GO web site ( www.pt-go.com). Speaking of training, let me throw in my once-in-a-while plea for informal training partners back East (if you're not near Montgomery County, MD, you can skip this now - sorry for the interruption!) Yes, I know of the folks in my area with more formal clubs/schools. What I'd like to find, though, is someone (at least one, maybe 2 or 3 people) available for workouts in a flexible kind of non-structure. More details below, I'll try to keep it short. > www.battlegroundtrainingcenter.com (updated soon) Looks like a nice little place y'all have there 8-) *Really* nice! I'm looking for somone interested in training a generic, blended mix of stuff - some eskrima/kali, some kickboxing, some silat, some European fencing, whatever people know and want to share or just play around with. See how things fit together, find common elements, look at differences and try different combinations, all of that. Very non-traditional. I have this idea about working out in my basement/on the deck/in the park just down the street (mostly the park, when the weather's good it's perfect). No fixed schedule, just "one evening a week" - might be Tuesday one week, then Thursday, then Wednesday, keeping everything flexible depending on people's work and other committments. No teachers, no students, just some folks (guys and gals) playing around. More in private mail, but I've asked about this before, so it should sound familiar. If you're near Gaithersburg, MD, and may be interested in helping start a training group, drop me a line! Good thing he was a > finance > clerk. That is exactly what I'm talking about. I recently taught a guy from a system that at 3rd Dan they were supposed to know over 500 techniques and a raft of other stuff. I asked him to show me some of his moves and was appalled. He had an incredible collections of techniques. Techniques that he could perform precisely as he was taught. That wasn't what made me go wide-eyed in disbelief. What boggled my mind is that each technique microscopically addressed details but with no overlap. He had absolutely NO understanding of the common principles underlying the techniques or the conditions under which the seven variations would work and why. Instead of seven variations of the same technique, he had seven different techniques that essentially did the same thing and no way to make any of them work. Talk about the potential for "analysis paralysis" >Another thought on this... The rest is history. *snicker* Yes, but sticking with the idea of getting too caught up in the details that they forget the goal...do you know how many people argue that because Alexander cut the Gordian Knot instead of undoing it that he "failed?" And that by dying young he only conquered Asia, not ruled it. I tell ya, you see this kind of silliness about detail everywhere. Still, the nine-man RP team, which lost eight members from the University of Cebu prior to the tournament, managed to haul 13 medals and in a classic David vs. Goliath battle, defeated the Germans in the team contest, where each country fields their three top fighters. "The Men's team of Henry Cabellion, Rodolfo and Randy Angeles, whose total weight was only 370 pounds defeated the German team led by 6 foot 5 fighter and two other six footers, who weigh a total of 650 pounds. Crowd favorite The crowd was rooting wildly for the Filipinos, who exhibited exceptional savvy, speed and excellent ringmanship," said Wekaf's Diony Canete in a faxed message to Sun.Star Cebu. Other gold medallists for the Philippines, were Rayu Ruben Chan, in the Juniors form and juniors middleweight sparring; Marie Therese Borces, in the women's multiple weapon form; and Ruth Arcilla, in the women's double stick sparring featherweight division team; Rowena Opigal, in the women's forms single stick, Remegio Berandoy, in the men's form single stick and Jaime Jake Morales, juniors single stick form. Borces also won a silver in the women's flyweight sparring, while Randy Angeles added another gold in the men's flyweight single stick sparring. The RP team, together with Cañete and coach Percival Pableo will be back in the country next week. --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2006 16:55:06 -0700 (PDT) From: Steve Kohn Subject: Re: [Eskrima] whips To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Folks, I agree with Jonathan regarding the general coolness of a good quality Kangaroo hide whip. There are however a few things I think are worthy of mention. A nice kangaroo whip requires care and feeding. You have to dress it with leather dressing pretty regularly (which is simple) and you're extremely limited regarding the surfaces you can work on. Concrete is like a cheese grater on 'roo hide and will destroy your substantial investment rather quickly. Grass is ideal. Nylon whips on the other hand, are amazingly durable and you can use them pretty much anywhere. About all you'll ever need to do is wipe 'em down if they start getting really dirty. The down side is that nylon isn't nearly as pliable as 'roo hide and you'll often have to work much harder on certain figures that come very easily on a broken in 'roo hide wipe. This can be problematic if you're trying to crack the whip gracefully rather than muscling it just to make a loud noise. When I trained with Anthony DeLongis he used to say that "we dont want an adversarial relationship with the whip; we want to form an alliance". So what im saying is...save your money and buy a nice 'roo hide whip. Mine are made by Peter "The Whipman" Jack of New Zealand and Terry Jacka of Australia (available through David Morgan's catalog) Good luck and always wear eye protection when practicing. -Steve Kohn Torrance, CA Jonathan Kessler wrote: Yes and no. Trust me, and I am essentially a cheap and frugal human being, the difference in the whip you'll get for $200-300 is, for your training and development, huge. The Latigo y Daga whip from Peter Jack is so entirely worth the cost difference, it's unbelievable. You can make do with a good nylon whip from a good Florida whip maker like Rhett Kelly, Joe Driver, or Steve Koliski and get by for about $100. But you'd do much better to go with the Peter Jack. It is pretty much a waste of money to get a leather whip for less than $100. I did it for my first whip. It was in fact a waste of money. If you're going to go cheap, go nylon. If you're really interested in the whip, go with a good kangaroo whip. Put it this way. I'd be pissed if you took my nylon whips. But if you messed with my Peter Jack whip, I'd have to come find you and whup yer ass ;-) Peter Jack - http://www.thewhipman.co.nz/ Rhett Kelly - http://www.cowwhips.com/ Joe Driver - http://www.joescustomwhips.com/ Steve Koliski - http://www.21stcenturywhips.com/ Joe Strain makes great whips, too, but they're a bit pricier than Peter's.
