Reminded me of the time ~20 years ago that reporter John Stossel came up to pro-wrestler David Schultz (Dr. D) and said something like "isn't pro-wrestling fake?". Dr. D hits him rather easily with an open hand slap, and sends Stossel flying. Then Dr. D says something to Stossel like "that was a slap, did that feel fake?" Loved it! :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Michael Koblic" To: "Eskrima digest" Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2006 21:05:24 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] Technically speaking Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Marc MacYoung wrote: "Now granted that a great number of people do come to schools in order to demonstrate their superiority. (I have a friend who during a sparring match got his cheek busted by such a kid). It is indeed rude to go into a school and start showing off what you know. Realistically, you are there to learn a new style not to strut your stuff. So there is a legitimate reason for schools to say don't bring your old stuff in. But those legitimate reasons not to bring your stuff in can also be used to shield the flaws/evolutionary dead ends that have crept into a system. Issues that a savvy instructor DOESN'T want his students to find out. Nor, quite frankly, are people who have invested a lot of time and energy into learning a system -- and by extension take pride in their ranking. They are big fish in little ponds and they don't like anything that can challenge that assumption -- much less engage in activities that would reveal the flaws in their system. Therefore they stick safely inside a comfort zone, where they can tell themselves it works, but don't want to test their stuff out" Amen to all that. I just feel that there should be a way to explore things "cross-culturally" so as to speak without anyone feeling that their manhood is about to be cut off. Two examples: 1) I got a bee in my bonnet about defence against a sucker punch. There are many, but only some of them work (why am I telling you this?). To get this theory tested it took me a while but I finally found an instructor who was prepared to experiment with me. Not many would. An added bonus was that he was 265 lb so if the defence worked against his punch, you *knew* it worked. I had fun, learned a lot, I did not think he objected too much as some of the stuff we got up to was hilarious. I am not sure that his brother who co-runs that dojo thought about it the same way, though... 2) In classical fencing there are schools of various nationalities emphasizing this or that, but if one visits a club and chooses to fence in a style that is, say, Congolese, as long as one fences within the rules and etiquette of the sport one is allowed to compete. In such a competition one then finds if one has learned to fence effectively or not. And I do not mean a formal competition but any sort of informal bouting in a club. I am sure that there are clubs out there which do just that but they are rare in my experience.
