It looks more like a drill or something like that. The attacker nearly always recoils before he attacks. Why doesn't the defender close the gap to stop the attacker? He still waits until the attacker is delivering his blow. Empty hands versus bladed weapons is a ' nice' way to commit suicide I think. I wonder why the defender does not take controll of the weapon when he takes down the attacker. To me it looks like that the attacker has all chances to use his weapon furthermore the defender took him down. Can anyone help? I had a professional fight choreographer view the tape and he IDed what is known in his business as "Cue-Reaction-Action-Principle." It's a trick used not only by stage combatants but also by professional wrestlers to minimize damage. It's where you give established precursor signal of a known attack with a known response to said attack. The signals are unique to each attack. You then attack in a known safe manner and he reacts in a known safe manner so neither of you get hurt despite the amount of force being used. This is how you can have 'choreographed unchoreographed' bouts you see in the WWF. Watch the tape again and look for CRAP in action. Once you know it's there, you can spot it." Going to the other end of the spectrum, yesterday I reviewed a part of a tape by Jim Grover ("Self-offense", 2001). In this he demonstrates the impossibility of traditional disarm against an edged weapon. Grabbing the weapon arm appeared low percentage tactic. He offers $1000 to anyone who can remove a boxcutter from a determined attacker in his school. No one has earned the cash so far as I know. His principles of edge weapon conflict seem to be: a) foul up the draw b) hurt him quickly c) run away It seemed to make a lot of sense... Anyone wanna go try it and let > me know > how you got on? ;o) I live in the Blue Ridge mountains not far from the Appalachian Trail and so encounter black bear on a regular basis; for the most part they want no part of humans. The times I've come upon one in the yard they take off as soon as they see me. Does make one do a double take before letting the dog out, though, and the trash had better be locked up. Spoke at length with a bear biologist about the issue; his take was that black bears are pretty easy to run off, so long as it's not a sow with cubs. Had another pal who spent a lot of time in the Alaskan outback and had lotsa hairy grizzly stories. He claimed the only way to outrun a grizzly was by sprinting down hill; claimed their haunches would get ahead of 'em if the tried to follow at speed. That's one I don't want to try. . . .
