Remember, we're not talking lines or tight loops, but entire planes. When a three to five foot blade is hurtling along, for example a horizontal plane, destroying everything in its path, you discover right quick the need to block -- as well as move. Often you're too far in to jump back and too far away to check his hand. And double edged blades reverse course PDQ so waiting until it passes ain't as good of a strategy as some might think. The far more subtle and concise cuts of the katana lend themselves better to evasive footwork and body movement as a sole defensive strategy. Against Western blades and attack styles you learn real quick why blocking with the blade is necessary M --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "amrinder singh" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2006 20:20:40 -0400 Subject: [Eskrima] need some help Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Dear members I wanted to get some advise from you regarding training. I have only attended a few classes and after a car accident i have been training mainly at home just with a few cycle drills as well as just hitting the tire, a heavy bag and lifting weights. Can you please recommend any videos onlline of new cycle drills, and information on traning alone with Eskrima, because currently im doing a 64 hour week and in about a month 30 hours a week and school full time. any help would be much appreciated. I was hoping to have a short term 6-7 month goal of entering the dog brothers gathering. P.s does anyone know if the online membership of Dogbrothers would be beneficial to a novice, and is it easy to get the concepts online. thank you and i appreciate any help you can provide _________________________________________________________________ Play Q6 for your chance to WIN great prizes. http://q6trivia.imagine-live.com/enca/landing --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Subject: Re: [Eskrima] need some help To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2006 17:59:30 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > .... I am rather confident that Crafty will respond in the affirmative. :) But regardless of how busy you are, do not limit yourself to only online training. Find an instructor and get live 1-on-1 training at least once or twice a week. This is especially true if you hope to do some full-contact, in any venue... Their DVD's have some excellent material; I think they have some great instructional content as well as fight footage, which may be the most useful to you if you will not get the chance to train with many others on a regular basis. In addition, I would like to add that nothing can beat personal instruction so you may want to look into private training if you schedule does not allow regular classes. Hope that helps. Hopefully Guro Crafty can chime in.
