I'll be visiting the states for 20 days and would like to do some training or sparring. I also would like to find a contact in NY Manhattan so i can do the same there. Has anyone ever looked at the Mongol invasion of Europe another case of East vs West. Europeans used chain mail and plaited armour and were no match for the fast Mongol calvary using broad swords and laminated armor that was lighter and the use of silk interweaves made it better quality than the heavy metal armor enemy soldiers wore. But the Mongols were un beatable because of speed and decentralised leadership. They were superior than any European force and used their agility in order to lure their enemies into the chase. They relied on the bow and arrow as a primary weapon and as a counter to plated armour. Mongols regarded the European, (and Japanese), fixation with "honor" and glory in battle as absurd. They were concerned with one thing, and one thing only: winning and conquest. How they did so was of no concern, so long as they prevailed. While the Knight and Samurai were determined to cement their places in history with deeds of daring, the Mongols were busy conquering the world, or virtually all of it. When facing western armies, with their emphasis on heavy cavalry, Mongol's did not rely on hand to hand combat, but rather picked off the heavy cavalry long distance with their bows. In the few cases where armor actually withstood their arrows, the Mongols simply killed the Knight's horses, leaving a heavily armored man afoot, unable to go any distance At Legnica, the Teutonic Knights and Knights Templer were able to make a stand, even dismounted, and inflicted unusually heavy causalities on the Mongols - but were killed to a man in the end. But then the Mamluks of Egypt managed to beat them on their own game. Also the Japanese barely escaped Mongol conquest. Bandile D. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Woof Amrinder: Short answer: Yes our DVDs (e.g. "Cycle Drills" featuring Guro Lonely Dog) should help. The DBMAA (Dog Brothers Martial Arts Association) has as one of its principal missions helping people such as you. (This includes getting your connected with a network of like-minded people). There are vid-lessons available and the DBMAA Members Website is quite active. I am always available on the forum for questions and conversation. One of my favorite things to do is work with people directly-- the Personal Training Program. For people with a typical M-F job, a PTP usually means they come out on a Friday evening and we train 5 hours Saturday and 5 hours Sunday (2.5 in the morning, 1.5 for lunch, 2.5 in the afternoon) and then fly home Sunday evening so as to be ready for work on Monday morning. (BTW we train where our DB Gatherings are held, which should help the location feel familiar to you on Gathering Day) Anyway, other arrangements are possible. Feel free to come check out our forum at www.dogbrothers.com and ask there about people's experiences with our DVDs and the DBMAA program and please feel free to give me a call at 310-543-7521. My friend and fellow Pekiti-Tirsia/Dog Brother practiionaer Nick Papadakis came to visit me (finally!) and I arranged a Sunday night showing. Review: Very fun! "Not quite what you'd expect" in every positive sense of the phrase - witty, subtle, non-traditional (i.e. not yet-another-martial-arts-documentary) while all the time paying respects to all the things we think we know about FMA. And yet we don't, if we haven't lived it. And that's more what this is about - the people, the culture, the roots. Kudos to Nick for a really enjoyable piece of documentary which moves you all across the spectrum of feelings - and after 40 minutes, literally left us wanting more (the silly DVD player wouldn't show the Extra features section to everyone's disappointment). And I think, very accessible to non-martial artists too. Great sound track (which of course Nick contributed too - a surprise only if you didn't know his history as a rock musician!). ... and almost as importantly, a critical piece of under-documented FMA history, as it sounds like at least one of the grandmasters has passed on since the filming. I hope Nick will continue to put his considerable skills to work recording FMA in the Philippines. And glad Nick could come hang out for a couple of days and show my students a thing or two about how to scrape!!!! -- maelstrom \ Pekiti-Tirsia kali Loki Jorgenson Martial _ \ Dog Brothers MA loki@maelstromCore.com Arts / O_/ Inosanto Academy www.maelstromCore.com \ pencak silat Jati Wisesa (604) 250.4642 \ Martial Dance/Fire Sword --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2006 08:01:39 -0500 From: "Van Harn, Steve" To: Subject: [Eskrima] Instruction in Las Vegas Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net A good friend of mine just moved to Vegas and entered the Academy to become an LEO. In the FMAs, you train 1-on-1 in class. That need not imply a 1-on-1 tutor. He is an excellent teacher and has a fantastic curriculum that would give you the weapons work that you want along with the empty hand training too.
