The FMAdigest is putting together a Special Edition called FMA Training. What it will consist of is first equipment that FMA practitioners train with. However the equipment is home made, and a description on how to use it and what is the benfit. Second part is body work, footwork, handwork, stickwork. On these [example: footwork, training, proper movement, purpose, benefit]. Or how to train for power, quickness, proper stick angles etc. Just one aspect can be written about. So if anyone has homemade equipment, training that they believe is benefitting etc, write it up add a few pictures and submit to publisher@fmadigest.com Arnis Balite www.arnisbalite.com --------------------------------- Yahoo! I have always been encouraged by my mentors and teachers to always train with intention and inspire the footwork! Train with intention, even though your hitting air or a tire or tree still insert the intention, remember we fight how we train. I like to do alot of stick patterns with triangular footwork stepping and make new stick patterns to break old ones. imo stick patterns are good and help devlop several attributes like mechanics but can also numb the nerologics, creating new stick patterns to break old ones keeps things fresh and inventive, esp when tyrin to combine stickwork with footwork this can be challenging but well worth the efforts. I have only attended a few classes and after a car accident i have been training mainly at home just with a few cycle drills as well as just hitting the tire, a heavy bag and lifting weights. Can you please recommend any videos onlline of new cycle drills, and information on traning alone with Eskrima, because currently im doing a 64 hour week and in about a month 30 hours a week and school full time. any help would be much appreciated." What system did you learn? Who was your instructor? How many classes did you attend? Are the classes still available? What did you not like about your instruction? And finally, what did you learn? Getting any first-hand knowledge of big blades nowadays is tricky. An experience of 26 years such as Rez's is uncommon and to be respected. An opportunity to experiment with blades particularly historical originals to determine e.g. which one will brake and when, must be very rare. I own 4 blades over 24 inches (which I choose to arbitrarily define as "big"), none of them a historical original. One can view edged weapons in several places in Europe. Sadly, I missed the Wallace Collection when I was in London. I am told that a museum in Madrid has either the largest or the second largest collection of edged weapons in Europe. In Paris there is les Invalides with numerous blades on display. There are also blades to be seen in some of the other Paris museums. A word of caution - learn French as the English descriptions tend to be abbreviated and occasionally inaccurate. In the Czech republic there are a few places to see blades in Prague, but the biggest collection to my knowledge is in the castle Konopiste south of Prague. The castle previously belonged to Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Sarajevo fame. He amassed a truly amazing collection of edged weapons, firearms and hunting trophies which is so large that only a small portion can be displayed at any one time. The problem is that one can learn only so much by looking at swords behind glass: One would like to handle them, swing them around a bit and cut if at all possible. For some reason the museum curators frown on this! In the North America one can handle a few blades here and there at shows. The Blade Show in Atlanta is particularly good for this (and other reasons - it caters to the Inner Child admirably!) Majority of the swords there are new constructions, however, which tell us little about their historical ancestors. How does a Cold Steel Warrior katana compare with a Murasama blade? The only place I could get my hands on a selection of old swords was in a small antique shop at the Marche aux Puces in the North of Paris. A surprisingly tolerant shopkeeper let me run loose and handle his wares. Talk about a candy store...But even there the swinging and cutting was restricted. If you want to buy any, though, you better have a sack of Euros! Somewhat related to this: Prague is the only city I know where there are no less than 3 shops which sell replica historical swords for the purposes of theatre and re-enactment. Just like that, over the counter. They are run by enthusiasts who assure me that the copies are pretty close to the originals. Not sharp, of course. Re-enactment seems popular there and you can see groups of young people in the parks swinging assorted cutlery. Anyone has similar experiences in Asia?
