When I stopped going in, say 1981, it was Trainers not Docs (e.g. Adidas Trim Trab/Samba) Farah trousers, (cut at the bottom) and the must-have - a Sergio Tacchini Tracksuit top, often over a Pringle T-shirt . In these days of Stone Island, on some Saturdays, some pubs in London, and no doubt elsewhere, have signs outside saying "No Stone Island allowed", almost like biker clubs saying "No colours". As for football films, I found that The Firm with Gary Oldman was really good, although it missed the fashion thing completely, which was a shame. I imagine lots on the list are wondering what the hell football violence has got to do with fashion (or for that matter FMA), but if nothing else it used to give an indication of what you might be dealing with. However, until people buy books on how brave a man is by being a sound family member and doing right by his kids I guess they will be popular." FWIW I am currently writing a book, the plot of which takes place at France '98 (The Football World Cup). There is a distant subplot of football of football violence. There are some VERY violent characters involved (and yes guys, I am getting FMA in there too) I am making a special effort to avoid violence rather than glorify it .... although having said that, it may not sell ;) Strike from the void Julian ############################################################################# ######## This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. I saw it in London and Aberdeen and as a doorman had to deal with some reknown faces who became good friends. However, before any romantic illusions are generated there are some seriously nasty people with nasty views involved. To stand and go toe to toe against another firm (gang) when seriously outnumbered is an addictive adrenaline buzz and in an increasingly nannied state its still popular. Green St is another such film that has the hobbit in it. im not a fan of many of the films or books as they glorify and promote negative social standards. However, until people buy books on how brave a man is by being a sound familly member and doing right by his kids i guess they will be popular. Rockport replaced the Doc." I thought about the film a lot since and pondered some of the points you raise above: 1) I am not convinced that the film glorified the football hooligans necessarily, but represented them for what they were. Clearly there must be some pay-off for getting your face stomped in and the film, I think, showed it. 2) That it is a form of addiction is suggested by some of the older characters (Bill is over 40?) who still subscribe to that sort of lifestyle in spite of having family and business responsibilities. To keep doing it until sent down for 7 years of porridge would be unthinkable to most of us. 3) I thought it interesting that a considerable fighting prowess (given the prevailing circumstances) was maintained into a relatively old age with no effort to practice skills, strength, fitness or flexibility between the matches. Is it because one "real" fight is worth 10 "sparring" sessions?? :-) 4) Rockports, hm...It is gratifying to know one has moved with the time in spite of being out of touch :-) Michael Koblic, Campbell River, BC --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
