These photos are from my private collection, taken during the Tipunan sa Disneyland last year held at the Hilton Hotel in Anaheim, California in 2005. You have permission to reprint the photos with due acknowledgement to Abon and myself. By the way, Tipunan sa Los Angeles 2006 was a tremendous success yesterday. I will post a write-up and photo gallery soon. Remember, Tipunan always has good stuff (and instructors). His surname means "one who prefers to be free." On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Rajah Soliman, hero of the 1571 battle of Bangkusay, Manila. Born in La Paz, Tarlac, on September 17, 1871, General Makabulos, before the revolution, occupied various positions in his hometown. He was better known as a skilled writer and performer of Moro-moro stage plays. General Makabulos also longed to see his country free. With the help of Don Valentin Diaz, one of the founders of the Katipunan, he propagated the society throughout Tarlac Province. In preparation for the struggle to free the country from colonial rule, Makabulos organized his friends and kin into arnis and bolo brigades. They played vital roles when the revolution broke out in August 1896. On August 30, Governor General Blanco declared the provinces of Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Morong (Rizal), Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac, and Nueva Ecija in a state of war (estado de guerra). On January 24, 1897, Makabulos and his bolo brigades raised the "Cry of Tarlac" and overwhelmed the Spanish force in La Paz, thus launching the revolution in the province. The Revolution temporarily ceased following the December, 1897, Truce of Biyak-na-Bato. During this lull, General Emilio Aguinaldo promoted Makabulos to the rank of Major-General of all guerrilla forces in Pampanga, Tarlac, and Pangasinan. Distrusting Spanish intentions, Makabulos established his Central Directive Committee of Central and Northern Luzon in anticipation of a renewal of the revolution. He was among the leaders who rallied to General Emilio Aguinaldo when the latter returned and renewed the struggle in May, 1898. On July 10, 1898, he liberated Tarlac Province from colonial rule. The Filipino-American War saw General Makabulos as politico-military governor of Tarlac Province. He and his troops joined General Antonio Luna. But illness and compassion for his countrymen led General Makabulos to lay down his arms. He spent his remaining years writing plays, organizing the veterans of the revolution, and campaigning for the freedom of the country. General Makabulos y Soliman died on April 30, 1922. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
