This is a post from a fellow FMA practitioner. Two of my kids, sister and brother, are now in the Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Mandaluyong City being treated for dengue--a type of hemmorrhagic fever, a viral infection. My 4-year-old son has already been given 4 bags of plasma to prevent internal hemmorrhage. My 6-year-old daughter is covered with rashes and has dark, puffy eye-bags. But our family is one of the lucky ones. The emergency room of the Makati Medical Center in Makati City is filled with screaming children. The emergency room of the Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital aready has a DENGUE EXPRESS LANE. While the Philippine Media has focused on provinces like Rizal--where we live, by the way--as hotspots for dengue outbreaks, the reality, as I saw it in Makati City and Mandaluyong City, could be far worse. Why the DOH and the Arroyo government seems almost embarrassed to admit to the real extent of the dengue outbreak--if there is an epidemic already, they're not saying--I wouldn't even try to guess. The important thing is, our fellow Filipinos need blood. Dengue fever can kill. A fifteen-year-old boy in the ER where my kids stayed for a few hours almost died after going into shock due to internal bleeding. I hope he's still alive because the ICU was already full of patients and the doctors at the ER were desperately trying to find another hospital willing to admit that boy to their ICU. But emergency rooms are being filled with dengue patients, young and old. I talked to some doctors and they're saying that in hospitals in Metro Manila, some 90% of admissions at the ERs are for dengue. I saw very young patients, very old patients, and male patients in their 30s and 40s who looked like they could mix it up inside the UFC octagon. But they were all helpless, bedridden with tubes sticking out of their arms. If you are a Filipino in the Philippines, please give blood. To the Red Cross, yes, but I suggest you go directly to a hospital with an ER filled with desperate dengue patients. The process of giving blood is time-consuming and requires effort. You'll spend maybe 3-4 hours of your day for the blood-letting, interview and screening. But you'll be able to save lives. Really save lives, which is more than what blowhard Filipino politicians are doing. My kids were lucky. The hospital is already in triage mode because there are too many dengue patients. When we came in, we were still able to get 2 beds at a pediatric ward. There was still blood left to be set aside for my kids. Other patients who came after us were not so lucky. Some kids obviously were in the initial stage of dengue, but since there was still no blood evidence, they were asked to go home instead of waiting in an ER already bursting with patients. What's goint to happen to them? But the crucial thing is, we have to get the blood supply going. Even the older patients can go into shock and die. They need blood that only other Filipinos, their literal "blood brothers" in a situation like this, can give. I'm making this pitch for all dengue patients, even though my kids also need donors. If you want to donate blood for my kids just PM me. I don't know how much blood my kids will need, but your donation will help them and others. This is really an indication of how serious the situation is--hospitals now prefer blood instead of cash in exchange for transfusion treatment. Reasonable, because they can't transfuse your peso bills into a hemmorraghic child. Your donation will replace the blood given to my kids, but will also help other patients, because all donated blood will be processed, and their life-giving properties shared to more patients. So our deal with the hospital is, they tranfuse our kids, we find donors for them. The good news is, patients who have started internal bleeding can still be saved--BUT ONLY IF THERE'S ENOUGH BLOOD SUPPLY. If you are too far from Our Lady of Lourdes, fine, go to any hospital that's in need of blood for dengue patients. Donate blood now, while patients are still not bleeding to death internally. A total stranger already came to the ward where my kids are staying to give blood. He came because he heard our appeal over the radio. Why can't more of us do the same? Just go to a hospital, be an anonymous donor. Even though you are anonymous, you will be able to save lives. GIVE BLOOD NOW. I am only echoing an appeal that several doctors have said to me. Let's not wait for an official appeal from government. We can save more lives if we act quickly. Needless to say, my wife and I are already donating our blood. This is the type of "bloodshed" more FMA-ers should do, in my opinion. Give blood and save Filipinos, NOW. --__--__-- Message: 4 Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Bloodbrothers Date: Fri, 22 Sep 2006 10:04:28 -0400 From: "Cayson, Clint" To: Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hope you and your family are OK. -------------------------------------- Clint V Cayson -----Original Message----- From: dmarcaid@rochester.rr.com [mailto:dmarcaid@rochester.rr.com] Sent: Friday, September 22, 2006 7:51 AM To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Bloodbrothers If you happen to be in the Philippines, I hope you can help. Use their child in a one-off scam to - not only defraud the teacher - but also rob the child of the possibility to further himself/herself with all the benefit that they could otherwise have taken from long term exposure to the martial arts. Nice. As a thought though, anyone got anything interesting to say on the subject of what they have taken from their training, other than simply the ability to defend themselves and their families?
