Although I am an academic student at a local university, I was refused teaching access because the Filipino Martial Arts are not recognised by the UK Government and do not have a Governing Body. This came as a major surprise, not only to me, but to several other instructors teaching at the campus. On behalf of the "British Council of Kali Eskrima Arnis Instructors" (BCKEAI), I contacted the relevant UK Government organisations, including Sport England and Sports Coach UK. It was confirmed that the UK Government does not recognise any form of Filipino Martial Art as a "Sporting Activity" and without that recognition, there can be no Governing Body. With this as a starting point and with the full backing of the "Philippine Council of Kali Eskrima Arnis Masters" (PCKEAM) and the "Philippine Olympic Committee," the BCKEAI is working closely with the UN Representative for Sports and Culture and Sport England with the aim of: a) Gaining official Sporting Recognition for the FMA, regardless of system, and b) Gaining official Governing Body status for the FMA within the UK. Further international research has confirmed that there is no Governing Body worldwide for the FMA. This is no small task, and there are many requirements to satisfy, but the BCKEAI is very positive that this will elevate the status of the FMA to a level closer to other already recognised martial arts. It would seem that the real problem is that there is more than one. One is WEKAF. I believe another also exists. Probably more...
