First: Bob Breen is good. Period. He is a very kowledgeable instructor and a good fighter. And on top of that, he is a very nice person to be with. He was the first to invite Dan Inostanto to England in 1978. I am sure one could consider him the father ofr FMA in Great Britain, because he was the teacher of today well known FMA instructors like Pat O'Malley, John Harvey, Krishna Godharnia and many more. But for Europe there are many people in many countries very active, before Bob came to play and teach in other european countries. I am around the FAM in Germany since 1978, teaching internationally in Europe since 1982 (in 1980 in Ausrtralia) so I know a little bit about this time.. So in my opinion, nobody can be called the "father of FMA in Europe", because there were too many different developments in different countries. This shall take nothing away from Bobs accomplishments. He is a great guy and everybody who has trained with him will know what I am talking about. Just my 2 cents. I believe Bob Breen trained with BJ and JD. Yep. I think timeline would go he trained a bit with Angel starting in the late 60s. Joined the Air Force about 73. Hit Europe about 74 or 75. Hooked up with some Wing Chun group about that time and started more actively teaching there ~76. He claims to be the father of FMA in the UK and Europe. Father or not, it seems clear that the was one of the first teaching FMA there. First I've heard of it. His initial training in eskrima came from Jay Dobrin, who had learned from Rene Latosa, who had been stationed in the UK. Most of the people who are known for promoting FMA in the UK can be traced straight back to Bob: Pat O'Malley - multiple WEKAF world champion - was the manager of Bob's Academy for a while. John Harvey - multiple WEKAF world champion - was one of Bob's first students. Simon Wells - multiple WEKAF world silver medallist - trained by Bob. Andy Gibney - WEKAF world champion - was an instructor under Bob Krishna Godhania - head of Warriors Eskrima in Europe - member of Bob's team at the WEKAF world championships Neil McLeod - multiple WEKAF world champion - trained by Bob Bob has hosted seminars by many FMA luminaries - Diony Canete, Suro Inay etc Bob may not have been the first, but his influence has been vast. This is no disrepect to anybody. Just a thought. how can one give birth to something that already existed? Christopher Columbus didnt discover the "new world" he just exposed europe to a world they previouly knew nothing about. no disprect is meant by this statement, especially towards Mr. Bob Breen but no non Filipino can claim to be the father or mother of FMA anywhere in the world, just a proponent/ promoter of it. Insoanto is responsible for exposing the majority of US FMA practicioners to these arts. I never heard of him being called the father of Filipino Martial Arts in the US, and he is Filipino!!! .. That title typically goes to Angel Cabales. In Danny's 1980 book he states "I feel that Master Cabales, more than any other, is responsible for the emergence of Escrima in the United States." Under a pic of the Stockton eskrima group with Angel (Mary Tovar, Mike Inay, Al Concepcion and Remy Estrellia), Danny states "the future of the art is in their capable hands". Clearly Angel and his many students, including Danny, and the students of those students, have done the most to spread the FMAs in the US.
