These papers are/were also circulated worldwide. FMA news in these print media will put a definite timeline on who did what to spread FMA in the US - at least in the print media. I can provide you with the dates of my press releases. I am sure that Leo (Gaje Jr.) can provide you with the dates of his press releases. I held a non-armored single stick fighting tournament in New York City in December 14, 1975. The tournament was widely publicized. Only two groups showed up: Leo's students and my students. Indeed, Leo was able to field only one in the beginners division and none in the advanced division. Amante P. It is an in-depth study of throwing and include Filipino, Chinese and Japanese throwing implements. ED readers might want to check it out. Amante P. Lots of FMA luminaries were there Diony Canete, who was running the show; GM Ben Largusa; Manong Sam Tendencia; GM Leo Giron (there was a touch of tension when he and GM Cabales posed in the same picture-- someone wisely interposed himself between them as a precautionary matter) and many others. The theme of the day was "Unity!" so that this new organization could succeed. Our cameraman was an ex-navy SEAL and very high verbal skills so I decided to let him be the principal interviewer because he was both a warrior and a clean slate as to what he was seeing. If you listen to his question to GM Cabales, he asks "What do you think of this effort for everyone to fly under one flag?" I think GM Cabales understood the question to infer that he and his organization were being absorbed by WEKAF/Doce Pares--uh oh-- which explains the touch of rant in what follows. GM Cabales is quite clear that he considered himself to be the holder of the title "Father of the Filipino Arts" in America because, although the art had been practiced in the farm labor camps, he was the first one to open a school. To: Subject: [Eskrima] The Real Father of Eskrima in the USA Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net To All, Recently I was reading some threads about Sifu Danny Inosanto being the father of stick fighting in the USA, but that is to even close to correct. Even Sifu Danny talks about who he studied with in his 1980 book. The credit should go to Grand Master Angel Cabales who founded the Serrada system school. He was teaching back in in 1966 in Stockton, California. He taught anyone regardless of race his system. I have a friend who studied with him back in 1975. He speaks very highly of him. Grand Master Angel Cabales teaching touched many people today in the Filipino Martial Arts community. The footage was taken from a seminar that Dan had done at Toma Rosenweg's Aikido school in Los Angeles and yielded about 90 minutes of video instruction. I've always said that Dan's presentation of Modern Arnis is fairly unadulterated and as close to the Professor's presentation as I have seen in my "limited" experience (by that I wasn't one of those guys that followed the Professor around like the Grateful Dead). However, this particular presentation, by my observation and Dan's own admission, is all Dan's own exploration of Modern Arnis as applied to the espada y daga methods. At one point in the video Dan explains that he had never done much with espada y daga and gives credit to Bram Frank for "waking him up to the the blade" so to speak. This inspired him to go back and "do his own work" by returning to his roots and exploring stick and knife and sword and dagger. The results of his introspection can be clearly seen in this video. The difficulty level of this DVD was fairly low, which allows for the learning and rention factor to be failry high as the drills and techniques presented in it are quite simple with little to no "fluff". I walked away from the viewing with a few new tools and teaching methods. I give it four out of five stars. r/ Tim Kashino __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
