Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net America is a capitalist society. Hence, the student will have to pay for his teacher’s time. When the teacher is with the student, that is time away from the teacher’s family. That should cost the student some money. The title Master 1. Gives the student identity. On his own, the student will just be another John Doe. 2. Gives the student the opportunity to make money a. Teaching b. Selling t-shirts and other related materials c. Writing books d. Doing videotapes/CD e. Appearing in movies I am sure that Mark Wiley had gotten back the $500 he paid for his certificate from the books he had written on Serrada Escrima. Mike Inay, I am sure, had gotten more than $500 teaching and merchandising his videotapes. Hence, any money paid to Serrada Escrima for a Master’ certificate are money well spent. Those who were given the certificates have gotten a good return on their investment (ROI). In the course of bonding that occurs between teacher and student, the student would have taken his teacher to lunch, dinner, or breakfast. The student would have given the teacher gifts on special occasions. The student in all likelihood would expect the teacher to be grateful and the teacher would acknowledge this with a “Thank you.” Let us examine what happens during a dinner. The student will be asking questions about his teacher’s past, how he fought, how he trained, his likes and dislikes. In other words, the student would be getting an insight into his teacher’s personality. Indeed, even trivial questions could help the student get an insight into the teacher's personality. The answers to these questions are worth more than the cost of the dinner the student paid for his teacher. When the student returns to his school or resumes teaching, he will in all likelihood tell his students that he took the Founder of their system to dinner. This will enhance his standing as a teacher on his own and will increase his credibility because he has a close relationship with the Founder of his system. This is worth a lot, not necessarily in money, but in increased prestige. Unfortunately, most students are not able to associate increased prestige with the $ and an insight into the Founder's personality as not even worth the money they spent for the Founder's lunch. Based on the above reasons, $500 is not unreasonable to pay for a Master’s certificate. Founders of other systems might be charging even more. Amante P. Appearing in movies True, but sad. imho w/o the skill developed thru years and years of training (which, of course, would have cost the student $$) a piece of paper that says you are a Master should be worthless. In the end it seems that some folks are just more interested in titles and paper than they are in putting in the time to attain real skill. To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (a) the piece of paper known as the Master's Certificate = $500 or whatever (b) the time, money, blood, sweat, bruises, dedication, and perseverance of the student that went into it and the resulting skills and character, and the acknowledgement and recognition of the master of all those = priceless any (material) ROI on either (a) or (b) = gravy. Merry Christmas to one and all. Jay de Leon www.filipinomartialartsmuseum.com Ray wrote: > ... That should cost the student some money. The title Master > 1. Gives the student identity. Five hundred, fifty, or free, the decision would have remained the same. imho Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
