Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net It can be worth quite a bit. If that extra credential means catching the latest trend, getting the paying gig at the police academy, or tapping into a referral network it becomes a lot more than just a piece of paper. An extra two seminars and couple dozen students a year can be the difference between a school failing or surviving. I've known a couple people who went that route. They already had great skills. It's not like they were "parchment tigers". Their decision to spend time with one teacher rather than another was based on the marketability of the certificate at the end. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2007 17:06:10 -0800 (PST) From: Guro Dennis Servaes Subject: Response to [Eskrima] Knife defense videos To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Jye. I meant to respond to this earlier, but had some difficulty with my computer for about five days. Some of the techniques are used in Serrada Escrima but there are some other techniques that in my personal opinion are less practicle and we don't use. Skip the Karate DEMO. Montigue is correct 1- Evade (YES) 2- Bump (WELL OKAY) & 3- Attack vital areas to gain control of the situation (YES and continue until time to go home and wash up and eat). ALL THE TRAINING OF A LIFETIME means nothing at all if you cannot redirect and or counter the attack that is meant to eliminate you from this planet. A bump redirects the knife attack, but so what if it knocks the weapon out of the way, if he comes back and cuts you. Strength doesn't help much in a knife fight. Brains is what wins, and technique. A blade doesn't care how much weight some knuckle head can bench press, he's going to bleed just like anyone else. You have to and you want to destroy anyone that attempts to stick you as soon as possible. Get it over with and leave. The element of surprise may save you. If you feel fear leave. If you can't leave go to plan B! Train hard and have fun!
