Today's Topics: 1. handling long weapons (Ollie Batts) --__--__-- Message: 1 Date: Tue, 02 Jan 2007 19:35:10 +0000 From: Ollie Batts To: Subject: [Eskrima] handling long weapons Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net In the middle ages, a right-handed person using a two-handed Long Sword would indeed have held it with his right hand close to (or against) the hilt. The left hand was free to move from the lower part of the handle onto the pommel and, even, onto the blade of the weapon itself. In fact, in certain circumstances they sometimes used both hands on the blade in order to use the cross-guard to hook their opponent's weapon, neck or legs, or to strike with the cross-guard (like using an axe), or in order to thrust, unexpectedly, with the pommel. When using a short to mid-length pole weapon, such as a Pollaxe, the strong hand (usually the right) would be closest to the head. (Simply go chop some wood with an axe, or else drive a post in with a sledge(hammer) to see which hand you'll use next to the business end.) The thing about any pole weapon, however, is that there are no hard-and-fast rules about not switching your hands along the weapon when needs must - as long as you're not in ranks. Where pikes are concerned, the left hand was often used as a leading guide, with the Pikeman in a left lead (left foot forward), so that the power of the thrust would come from the right (strongest) side arm (and body). You also need to understand that many pole weapons, such as pikes, were used in formation of men. It wasn't really ideal to start whirling those around. The long rifle and bayonet was held and used in the way the rifle would be used on its own, and the same as when holding a Pike. Being shorter than a Pike, however, the butt of the rifle could also be employed to deliver crushing blows from many angles. Having said that, the initial function of the rifle was to kill or wound the enemy with the percussion of the fired round. At close-quarters it resembled a mix of Pike and short Staff use. And if we care to look at using the longer Quarter Staff, that doesn't have a primary end to it, so you can of course move your hands freely along the length of its shaft, switching your hands, etc., entirely as you wish. Pugil From: "Michael Koblic" To: "Eskrima digest" Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2006 16:19:45 -0800 Subject: [Eskrima] Fighting with long things Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Christmas brought much literature and the time to read it. As usual, this generated a number of questions. Here is two: 1) You are right handed. You hold a stick/sword in your right hand (duh!). You hold a two-handed sword with the right hand at the hilt, left hand at the pommel (I think). If you have a rifle with a bayonet you will have *left* hand forward (the pictures of the Battle of Culloden where the government troops were actually reversing this grip to administer the famous stab-to-the-right notwithstanding). How then do you hold a staff/pike/naginata or what have you? 2) Do you stay in your usual guard whatever the opposition or do you try to match the lead?
