I can only give you an advice: Don't burn double layer DVDs (DVD9) when you want to sell them. You only get problems due to very bad compatibility. You already have experienced this. And it will get worse when you sell them to non-students. But you can burn the single layer DVDs (DVD5) with a different compression. You do not need best quality, because the standart TV sets could not relsove this anyway. Especially when the footage comes from VHS, then you can compress even more, because you don't have a high quality image anyway. From my experience, you can compress the fotage to such an extend, that you can fit 80 - 90 minutes on a DVD5 without visible loos in quality. You will have MUCH less problems this way, as if you would sell DVD9 to customers. Just my 2 cents Dieter Knüttel ABANICO GmbH & Co. If a significant percentage of people >can't view these DVDs then I'll use single layer double sided >disks for my longer videos. I'm not sure how it is in US, but at least in Finland most (if not all) player can play dual layer disks. Also, I since digital media can be copied over and over again without the loss of quality (if the settings don't overrule this) digital media has a lot longer life span compared to VHS, so I think copying them at best quality is the right solution. You might also consider making special two DVD versions for those without the possibility to view DL disks. In the future (not even a very remote future) I guess all DVDs will play DL disks as well. Also with the coming new technical solutions (BluRay and HD-DVD) which allow a much greated amount of data to be stored, I think it would be a waste ot time and effort to make single layer disks with dimished picture quality. - Marko --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Bill Lowery" To: Date: Mon, 8 Jan 2007 12:47:32 -0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: DVD bitrate Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Tuhon Bill, If you are only getting 1 hour of video on a DVD you are using too high a bitrate. You should easily get 2 hours. Dual layer discs are variable in their compatibility, so you should try to aim for single layer if possible. For starters, it's difficult to get a quality burn. Here are some tidbits to help with DVD compatibility . Some of this may be way out there, so email me for more. 1) DVD-Rs are slightly more compatible than DVD+Rs when the booktype has not been set 2) DVD+Rs are better with older players when the booktype has been set to DVD-ROM 3) Don't author at the highest video data rates - stick 6-8 MBits/second, as older players will skip when they can't keep up. Write the audio as PCM uncompressed (48000 Hz, 16-bit stereo) or AC3 at 384 kbits/second for compatibility. Sony Playstation2 (especially older production runs) is picky about the audio data rate. Some authoring systems offer MPEG layer2 audio compression but a fair number of DVD player can't handle that. 4) Avoid using DVD labels as they will peel off with time, especially during hot summer months. I've seen it happen. Labels will affect playback ability and can potentially gum up the DVD player to the death. CD labels are less of an issue due to the spin rate, but they also can peel off with time. Use good quality, direct-print DVDs. CostCo sells 100pk spindles of TDK print-ons for $40, with the occasional specials of $30 or $20 (later this month). I use an Epson R800 printer to directly on the DVDs. Burn, THEN print. R800 uses pigment-based inks, costs more, dries faster and offers more resiliency to water/finger smudges. R200/R300 are cheaper but have need 24+ hours to dry. My experience with DVD+R Dual Layer is marginal. You have to have a really good burner. My SATA Plextor has a rought time writing dual layer disks without errors while my $30 BenQ DW1655 or DW1670 totally rocks with Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL. The BenQ can actually write at 6x reliably. Even with perfect writes and the same media, my good Sony DVD player often locks up somewhere in the DL. I wouldn't ship a product on user-burnable DVD DL's. You're better off shipping on two disks. Burning will be faster and more reliable. If you need a splitter program that doesn't recompress, try DVD Fab Platinum. I burn with Nero because I like the poast-burn data verify function. Also, I have not found any printable DVD DL's. I learned a lot if this from http://www.videohelp.com/, so check there first. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Al Sardinas" To: Date: Mon, 8 Jan 2007 20:02:45 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Dual Layer Dvds Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Tuhon McGrath, When converting VHS tapes to DVD, the picture quality of a single layer DVD vs a dual layer DVD will be about the same. This is because the maximum bit rate of a VHS is tape about 4000 kbits per second so converting a tape that is about 2 hours long will fit easily on a single layer DVD without any loss in quality. DVD quality can be 7000 kbits or more. Maybe some members with professional experience can provide you more info.
