Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Just in case anyone is interested in Savate and/or kickboxing: We have one of the leading Savate trainers in the world, Gilles le Duigou, coming over from France on Sat 27th January (just a few days away). Gilles is a former Champion in his own right (see his biography below) and is now one of the top trainers in the world. Gilles is bringing Florence Suire over with him, and she is a several times Savate Champion and is very highly rated by Gilles. This are some of her fighting achievements: 1993 European Champion 1995 World Champion 1996 European Champion COMBAT (full-contact Savate) 1996/7 French Champion COMBAT 1998 French Champion ASSAUT 1999 Vice Champion (runner-up) France COMBAT 2000 French Champion ASSAUT European Assaut Champion Winner of the World Cup Assaut 2002 Winner of French Cup Assaut for veterans (over 35) 2004 French Champion 2006 French Champion Biography of Gilles le Duigou (former Champion and now leading Trainer) 30+ years in Savate 114 competitive fights in total (rough breakdown in brackets): Savate (60) only lost 4 times in Savate competition; English Boxing (20) 14 amateur and 6 Professional (was amateur Boxing Champion of Paris, and winner of two other amateur tournaments. As a Pro' won 4, lost 2); Kickboxing (14); and Full-Contact (20). One of Gilles' Full-Contact fight trainers was the legendary Dominic Valera. In 1985, Gilles fought and beat the fabulous Francois Pennacchio in the semi-finals of the French Championships. After losing the first round, to the highly-skilled and fast kicking Pennacchio*, Gilles switched tactics and used his English Boxing skills to win the next four rounds. In 1986 (before there was an official World Championships), Gilles beat everyone he met in the ring, including Daklaoui (Fr), to become Champion of Europe. In that same year, he also fought a Japanese Full-Contact fighter, who was an extremely powerful kicker. Gilles had been ill in the weeks before the fight and, possibly as a result of that, he had both arms broken when he tried to block a particularly strong round kick. Gilles continued to fight, even though he knew one of his arms was broken, and eventually knocked out his opponent in the fourth round with a fouetté (whip kick) to the liver. He did end up with at least one steel plate in his as a result of that fight however. In a remarkable career, during which he lost very few times, Gilles was not afraid to fight anyone. After the fight with the Japanese opponent, he even took on the remarkable Richard Sylla. Probably not the best fight to take, especially after such injuries. Sylla was virtually unbeatable at the time anyway, and one of the few people to defeat Gilles in the ring. *Pennacchio (who was beaten by Gilles) later fought and defeated Ramon Dekkers, the Thai Boxing legend, in a kickboxing challenge match. Luca De Franco wrote: "The Dutch sensation fought in Milan in the 1990s losing a spectacular match against French Savate Champion Francois Pennacchio. Nobody expected Pennacchio to last more than a few minutes, but the Frenchman found out that Savate sweeps were effective against Dekkers and used them to build a victory on points." I believe that the legendary Dan Inosanto was present at that fight and allegedly said it was "like watching Bruce Lee again... at his best". And, as I said above, Gilles beat Pennacchio when he fought him!
