Also the blade/edged weapon is the more common weapon used in encounters in combat currently and thus the focus. This is how I have been trained and trained my students. most of the FMA systems have interchangeable relationships based on the weapon in hand. stick(long and short),Knife flexible weapon, empty hand and so on. This is often within the application. and how it presented. Hope this helps. Been down for a long time. I am looking for FMA instructors in Texas. Any recommendations? Personally I would much rather pinoyslap (I can say pinoyslap im pinoy :P) a wouldbe attacker its the same motion anyway just not hands balled in a fist. Modern Arnis to me means not as "old skool" maybe more blending if you can call it that?... I think my second fav thing about stick drills is doing them with a partner helps bring out the visual and I feel like I can see the lines better. The thing about stick patterns has been like studying music, we learn patterns but then have to unlearn them. Its been tough for me trying to apply that process in ma, but knowing that though the process" all is revealed" (heh i joke) it makes the journey all the while worthwhile. switch it up with a stick and a trainer blade too =) > When running stick drills in Kali it seems as if the tactics are designed around the assumption that your opponent is wielding a blade where it seems Modern Arnis' tactics are designed around the assumption that your opponent is wielding a stick. > > Is this a valid observation or just a random event? > > Thanks for the input. > > - Anthony > That is the reason they call it Modern, the stick is just a stick and does not stand for a blade. Is this a valid observation or just a random event? Thanks for the input. Anthony Hi Anthony, Your observation is valid.  The bulk of Modern Arnis practitioners in the USA do not do blade applications.  Remy Presas was trained in the family bolo art but seldom taught it in the USA.  He would teach many of the moves from the blade (banda y banda, figure eight, etc.) but from a stick orientation.  He didn't like teaching the blade applications in the US.  There were a few of his students who pestered him enough to get him to relent and teach blade applications.  One of them is Bram Frank, head of CSSD/SC.  He is in the most recent issue of Black Belt magazine.  I have put out a book and DVD on the subject of Modern Arnis usage of the blade as well.
