Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello all - my apologies for the long delay in getting the FMA database back on-line. In short, it was coded as a two-tier web service in msql on IRIX. And that died. Subsequently it needed to be moved to a new Linux server. So I have had it in mind to re-architect the whole thinking in mySQL/PhP and.... just haven't had the time. Meanwhile, the web service that I moved to isn't as accessible in terms of just "hacking" a working solution so even a workable pro tem solution isn't happening. So the database has been languishing.... And then there is life, work, family and all that. For the last little while, I've been hunting (rather feebly I must say) for someone who would like to do the heavy lifting It would not be a particularly complicated project really. Most of the work is in the DB schema and the rest is mostly off-the-shelf shopping-cart functionality. If anyone would like to volunteer to help get the FMA database back on-line, I would like to see this return to life as well. Otherwise, it will rest on when I can next create an opp - probably in June. >> Does anyone know if the FMA database of instructors has a new address? >> Been down for a long time. >> > > Does anyone know if the FMA instructor database is coming back to life? > It was a great resource to have available. > > Ray Terry > rterry@idiom.com > > -- maelstrom \ Pekiti-Tirsia kali Loki Jorgenson Martial _ \ Dog Brothers MA loki@maelstromCore.com Arts / O_/ Inosanto Academy www.maelstromCore.com \ pencak silat Jati Wisesa (604) 250.4642 \ Martial Dance/Fire Sword --__--__-- Message: 4 To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] FMA in Texas Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2007 14:26:06 -0500 From: leohaven5@aol.com Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Look up PG Mike Blackgrave. I'm an Cacoy Doce Pares Instructor in the Netherland and I'm enjoying every second of it. I created www.eskrima.pagina.nl ( please email me you websiteadress if you ain't on it) and I want to ask you a few - for me important - questions: *Why is it that Eskrima ain't a populair martial art in the Netherlands? *I have some ideas ofcourse, but I really want to hear some ideas of yours!!! I am also an Jeet Kune Do instructor and it's unbelieveble hwo that grows by populairety comparing to Eskrima. Why is it that Eskrima-teachers always have a few student in the Netherlands? Why is Eskrima more populair in America? Why do all the people look funny when I tell them I train Eskrima? Why ain't Eskrima on the tele? Why Why Why Why Why?? Don't get me wrong. It's not my intention to put Eskrima on the 'map', but sometimes it seems that I'm one of a few in the Netherlands who loves Eskrima THAT much, that I feal a little bit lonely ;-) I quit my fulltime job as a carsalesman to throw myself in Eskrima, to teach everybody this wonderfull M.A. but a few seems interested. WHY! I really would appriciate your input, your thoughts, your ideas, your fighting power. Mabuahy!! Welcome. > *Why is it that Eskrima ain't a populair martial art in the Netherlands? Perhaps you are marketing it all wrong. You need to say that your style is the preferred style of the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Army-Navy-Marine- Coast Guard special forces, college football teams, fire departments, ordinance disposal units, Parajumpers, SWAT, F-22 Raptor pilots, and the New York City taxicab drivers. Or it seems that a few styles of eskrima like to make such claims here in the USA.... and some poor souls actually believe them. :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2007 19:57:23 -0800 (PST) From: jay de leon Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Your thoughts To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Ray forgot the Dallas (or insert your favorite NFL team) cheerleaders. Seriously, a few random thoughts. As Ray said, it is a marketing and perception issue. As I have written in articles, FMA is not even the most popular martial arts in the Philippines. That does not retract from its greatness and validity. FMA is not the most popular martial arts in the US, but it has made big strides, thanks to the efforts of many (see my article again about the spread of FMA in the USA). I commend your passion for the FMA, and your efforts in the Netherlands. Keep networking and plugging away. You have a great mentor, Manong Cacoy. Who knows, one day, you might be acknowledged as one of the fathers of FMA in the Netherlands. Jay de Leon www.tipunan.com P.S. Thanks for including my sites in your site.
