Brother Jay is right when he says that eskrima isn't even the most popular, as in widely advertised, martial art here in the Philippines. Taekwondo and karatedo surpass both in marketing, and the MMA, grappling arts and capoeira are already reaching the public eye. Yet, eskrima is very much alive and well, even if it isn't as much in the public eye as yet (though television and movies have helped - if you could call that helping ;-) ) One of the key elements is tournaments. The sports aspect is, for many of the younger ones, an attraction to the art - a chance to identify with local martial heritage and at the same time, being able to play with others who share the same passion. Of course, there is the self-defense aspect too that also attracts many people, especially those in the law enforcement, security and military agencies. Based on this I have two suggestions for you: 1) If you want to popularize it, teach the sports aspect publicly. The other parts you can teach for those who are ready or who are interested in them. I understand that sports is a major passion in Europe so this may be one way to go. 2) Try to find a way to teach members of the law enforcement, security and military communities. They would be interested in the art as it is and if you do a good job, they do your marketing for you. Hope that these help, and may your efforts be successful always. Teaching a martial art and having a web page is hardly a business. If it didn't matter to Vincent and the CSE group then why have a page up since March 15, 2005, at cabales.com that says: ====================================================== www.cabales.com is currently down due to site updates. We apologize for the inconvenience. ====================================================== The former site that Vincent had up was a good source of CSE info. I only hope it returns at some time in the near future. Hopefully you feel likewise.
