It is with great honor that I announce the first ever BaHad Zu'Bu Mangtaas Baraw training camp to be held on the Island of Ponson Camotes, Cebu, Philippines in July of 2007. I have found they have to be the most durable rattan around. Thick skin and very dense. I got some great kamagong sticks there a way back. The "ugly stick" package is a great deal for all you cheapos out there. www.bloodsport.com As for the lexan, look up plastic tubing on google. Actually polycarbonate tubing. It is a generic name for Lexan. Tap plastics cut my tubing to length, they have held up through years of Boston winter training without a scratch. www.tapplastics.com Aleks Nowicki Jou Fang Chuan/Nine Angle Fist --------------------------------- Access over 1 million songs - Yahoo! Where videos are handy is once you have several years of face-2-face training under your belt, videos help bring new/different ideas and concepts to you that you might not see otherwise." If you can learn from a real live Eskrimador, good for you, that is a preferred method. If your nearest one is 700 km away, you make lemonade. I was brought to FMA by Paul Vunak tapes. I quickly went on to others. I think you can learn solo techniques from DVDs (better than from tapes as the slo-mo is so much better) if you practice in front of the mirror a lot and sometimes use your own camera. Supplement with as many seminars as possible. All in all I found that it is the two-person skills that suck, but that is the nature of the beast. I found that my solo techniques do not lag as much. Occasionally one ends up in a funny situation where the instructor no longer teaches the technique he showed on the DVD or changed it. Then it is a bit of a struggle to replace one "muscle memory" with another. I do not know of any better training DVDs than those by the Dog Brothers. Finally, on occasions, I have been asked by people to "teach them sticks". I refuse to "teach", but explain that I am happy to share the little knowledge I have. Sometimes two or three of us sat and looked at videos together. Often these were people who had other skills (kickboxing) which they taught me in exchange. I have taught myself many other skills the same way. There is no reason why FMA should be an exception. It can be, however, frustrating if you see a new concept or skill on the DVD and have no opportunity to try it out. Alternatively there is probably someone at State College. I'm in Williamsport about 4-5 times a year as well. Granted you will still have to travel a bit but given your location that probably can't be helped. Re. training tapes: they are good for getting a general idea of a teacher or system and to compare different styles, training methods, etc. - but it's difficult to learn from tapes unless you have a foundation to which to compare what you are seeing. PM me if you have any questions.
