Michael, Not to try to bust you on your comments but I would have to agree with Ray. Sometimes DVD's/Tapes do not show the sublties of a technique. I once asked a GM if he has any videos. He says “yes but don’t get caught up on videos. You don’t see/feel everything in them.” In short, sometimes the viewer may “see” techniques but “miss” something shown on video because the GM/instructor inadvertently did not point out every little detail —whether it is foot, hand, finger, body and/or stick placement. I believe GM/instructors do techniques so many times they inadvertently forget to mention “the little things” but will correct you in a second if they see something “wrong”. “There is training, then there is understanding”—Yuli Romo. If a FMA instructor is not available and the only way to learn is through video, I would recommend corresponding with an instructor and get their videos. Start an FMA club/people to practice with. Then send videos of yourself performing the various techniques to the instructor or better yet visit his school for 1 on 1 live instruction a couple times a year so that the instructor can critique your progress. Looking at yourself on video is one thing but having an instructor critique your progress is another. If traveling is not an option, ask the instructor if he is willing to do a seminar in your area provided you do the leg work—place for the event, scheduling, advertising, hotel stays, etc. “All in all I found that it is the two-person skills that suck, but that is the nature of the beast. I found that my solo techniques do not lag as much.” Maybe I am not understanding this as the way you intended. I believe 2 person drills help a student pick up lines of attack, develop timing, body movements, counters, footwork, live hand/stick hand coordination, the energy of your partner, minimize the fear of a swinging object, etc. Sometimes techniques need “lag” time, 1/2 beat, broken rhythm, to make them effective-sometimes not. Don’t get me wrong, solo training is good but having a partner is better. Example, a boxer shadow boxes as part of his training but also has a sparring partner to hone in his skills. “Occasionally one ends up in a funny situation where the instructor no longer teaches the technique he showed on the DVD or changed it. Then it is a bit of a struggle to replace one "muscle memory" with another.” Pattern drills are just training tools. One doesn’t perform pattern drills to the point it becomes “muscle memory”. Let us say it is a stick pattern drill. Some things to try to prevent muscle memory are: -Throw in an unexpected angle every once in a while, then go back to the pattern without breaking flow. Have your partner do the same thing. -Use your other hand to perform the drill. This is good for your partner also when you do this—checking hand sometimes ends up on a different part of the body. -When you get proficient with the above, try switching hands without breaking flow. -Add ½ beats—meaning if performing a 1 for 1 drill, see if you can pull off 2 hits to his 1. If you are doing a 1 for 1 meaning one hit/one “block”, eventually you will throw away the pattern drill and do the drill at random angles. Thus, eliminating muscle memory. “Finally, on occasions, I have been asked by people to "teach them sticks". I refuse to "teach", but explain that I am happy to share the little knowledge I have.” I like how you said that and commend you on sharing what you know to others. To me, sharing knowledge is one of the ultimate test in understanding the material. Sometimes knowledge does not get shared for one reason or another and the next generation misses out. It’s a shame. Anyways, this was not meant to offend anyone. I am no expert in the FMA (not even close). I am just a student sharing my 2 cents in the matter. Sam. --------------------------------- Cheap Talk? I would be glad to help you with anything you need regarding the Filipino Martial Arts and being in Central PA. I am located in the heart of Central PA - State College (downtown) @ TITAN FITNESS www.titanfitness.com which is on the edge of the Penn State campus. We are known for being the go to source for the Filipino Martial Arts in Central PA. I am a certified instructor under Guro Kevin Seaman of East West Martial Arts - http://ewmaa.com/arts.html in the Filipino Martial Arts (Kali/Arnis/Escrima/Silat) along with JKD/JFJKD and am also an instructor in Dog Brothers martial arts under Guro Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny I also hold credentials in Thai Boxing and other arts. As you may know, we will be having a Dog Brothers seminar with Crafty Dog at the end of this month which I strongly encourage attending - http://www.titanfitness.com/dogbrothers.htm . While learning from tapes can get you a long way I have always believed in going directly to the source so I don't miss any of the important nuances that may not be caught when tape training. If I can be of any assistance feel free to contact me @ guro@titanfitness.com or post back on the Eskrima Digest. Woof! Sifu Kevin's sticks from East West Martial Arts have been good to me through the years and so has the Dog Brothers' sticks along Nick's sticks from Kombat Instruments. I go to Dog Brothers for their specialization in larger diameter sticks, Nick for his great special on bulk student rattan and killer staffs and I go to Sifu Kevin @ East West for his custom rattan jobs. From the different FMA groups to Tai chi, Thai boxing to kung fu. Very cool to see if you like martial arts in general. It is about a 45 min. cab ride from manila. If this is your first time in the Philippines, you may want to bring a "local" so that you can avoid cab scams and so that you can get back to manila easily. It was hard getting a cab to go back to manila from there. --- Jason wrote: > I tried to email the contact person but it bounced. > Any other suggestion? > > Jason > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Ray" > To: > Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 9:11 AM > Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Training in the Philippines > > > >> I am planning to go to the Philippines some time > this year and I wanted > >> to > >> inquirer on cost (in dollars) for training. I have found they have to be the most durable rattan around. Thick skin and very dense. I got some great kamagong sticks there a way back. The "ugly stick" package is a great deal for all you cheapos out there. www.bloodsport.com As for the lexan, look up plastic tubing on google. Actually polycarbonate tubing. It is a generic name for Lexan. Tap plastics cut my tubing to length, they have held up through years of Boston winter training without a scratch. www.tapplastics.com Aleks Nowicki Jou Fang Chuan/Nine Angle Fist --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2007: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
