To: Subject: [Eskrima] Honoring Your FMA Master & System Thoughts Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net To All, Recently I was discussing with some friends on the subject of maintaining a notebook after a training session. One of my friends said "Why should I do that, I am traditional and commit it to memory". I said this is true but you should still maintain a notebook to help as a memory jogger. I said I keep a notebook, complete with simple sketches. A couple of weeks later I was invited to a special training session where several masters were gathered. I told them about what my friend had said. The Masters both quickly said "you should keep a notebook". One of the other students there said "I come to training, why do I need a notebook?" One of the masters said something prophetic- "Are not my words and teaching worth preserving for the future?" Would you let my teaching be lost through time? Recently in another training session I was asked to bring my finished notebook, that I had previously given my Master a copy of it electronically. (I had portion typed with pictures and caption with notation about key points.) My Master asked me show my notebook to the other Master. The other Master said I wish that I had a student who would do this for me, as you have honored your Master with this! This made think about this" Are all of us doing what we can to preserve of our Master teachings". This some food for thought for all of us. From the 70's on, I have attended numerous seminars, private lessons, training camps and other training venues with the best of them, including Remy Presas, Cris Vasquez, Godofredo Fajardo, Mat Marinas, Uncle Bill Thouars and others too numerous to mention. I have always kept notes. Most of them are meticulous, some of them are sketchy. But I have found it both helpful and nostalgic to refer to them when I am writing, teaching or training. Good point, Marc. Y'all may want to check out some of Marc's writings at my website. http://www.filipinomartialartsmuseum.com/Articles/lawrence/lawrence_articles.html Jay de Leon www.tipunan.com steven.armstrong1@us.army.mil wrote: My name is Steve Armstrong I am with the US ARMY and for my diary I have put it all on video so I can have it on CD ROM and review it all the time to ensure I do not forget anything.
