For me, the act of organizing my thoughts and writing them down in an understandable format (in combination with muscle memory) is what really helps drive them home and commit them to memory. As reference material, I don't really need to use them much at all. I didn't like to stop after each principle/technique that I was shown to write it down. Instead, I like to keep going looking for underlying principles in what I am being shown. When I figured that out, it's much easier for me to remember later for organizing my thoughts, moving through the motions, then committing to paper. Luckily my instructors were the type who always had an underlying principle to the concepts and techniques they were showing at any given time. That really makes it easier to remember the differing techniques coming out of that principle later, as opposed to throwing a mish-mash of disjointed techniques at you. Today, each of my classes are structured this way. A common principle/base that a number of other techniques spring from. I actually had a newer student (who had trained in another system previously) comment on this very subject last week. He liked the fact that each class had a common theme/principle/movement that we would spend the whole training session covering the differing aspects of. It made it much easier for him to retain what was covered, as opposed to his previous instructor who would throw out a plethora of techniques every class with no common thread. The point to my rambling you ask? As a student: keep notes. It will help you organize your thoughts and retain what you've been given. In can also be a reference for you later. As an instructor: You can organize your training sessions in a way to help your students retain the information. Teaching is a giving activity. Giving to students you feel are worthy or in need of the experience you have. Structure it in a way that aids and makes retention easier. Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean water it down or spoon feed them. It can be done while also keeping it real & combative like the FMA's are meant to be. One of my friends said >"Why should I do that, I am traditional and commit it to memory". My answer to that would be to think back to the first time I had the pleasure of attending a seminar with Dan Inosanto. Due to scheduling, I could only do a half day, but when I did the brain dump and wrote up my notes, I ended up with 27 drills. I know many people who wait until the next day to write their notes and they end up with... nothing, nada. Someone wants to be some sort of hard-ass traditionalist, hey, whatever trips your trigger. I just figure we live in an age of unparalleled access to pens and paper, and the canny martial artist uses every tool at his disposal. Although I am unable to find some of my older notebooks, my instructor always encouraged us to keep notes of the material covered and I find the notes are highly useful especially when trying to remember the concepts that were presented at camp or seminar featuring a multitude of instructors from various systems. Heck one of my classmates has an amazing amount of notebooks. Keeping notes are great for reference and preservation _________________________________ Robert www.islandwarrior.com www.myspace.com/islandwarriordotcom -- __--__-- Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2007 08:02:04 -0800 From: "Lawrence, Marc J." To: Subject: [Eskrima] Honoring Your FMA Master & System Thoughts Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net To All, Recently I was discussing with some friends on the subject of maintaining a notebook after a training session. One of my friends said "Why should I do that, I am traditional and commit it to memory". I said this is true but you should still maintain a notebook to help as a memory jogger. I said I keep a notebook, complete with simple sketches. A couple of weeks later I was invited to a special training session where several masters were gathered. I told them about what my friend had said. The Masters both quickly said "you should keep a notebook". One of the other students there said "I come to training, why do I need a notebook?" One of the masters said something prophetic- "Are not my words and teaching worth preserving for the future?" Would you let my teaching be lost through time? Recently in another training session I was asked to bring my finished notebook, that I had previously given my Master a copy of it electronically. (I had portion typed with pictures and caption with notation about key points.) My Master asked me show my notebook to the other Master. The other Master said I wish that I had a student who would do this for me, as you have honored your Master with this! This made think about this" Are all of us doing what we can to preserve of our Master teachings". This some food for thought for all of us.
