I wouldn't have made it through college & work without it. I encourage my students & employees to so so as well. I can't count how many times I've attended seminars with great GM's & would have not been able to retain the huge amount of information otherwise. It has been said that the mind can only retain so much knowledge & the attention span diminshes. Albeit, I do enjoy being entertained & inspired, but my emphasis & hard earned $ is also to aquire information, knowledge & skill. Weekend seminars are wonderful (I wish I was exposed to them in my early years), but I was blessed to come from the old school of personal one on one instruction, where it was easier to learn & revisit & question. Seminars are so jam packed with information that I have foud myself mentally exhausted trying to remember without a notebook. I remember taping my college lectures along with note taking (this was self torture, who wants to sit through biochemistry twice!). I've taken this into my FMA training & do cherish the voice tapes I do have of great Manongs who have now passed on. Many great martial artists use notes, e.g. "Tao of Jeet Kune Do". Many of my instructors have tons of notes. I have read that you must write down what you envision, otherwise it's still only a dream. I also regard my notes as rather nostalgic & appreciate how much I've learned & grown by all the wonderful influential sources I've been fortunate to meet. To each his own, but it works for me. Maraming salamat, Lino Espejo _________________________________________________________________ Find what you need at prices you’ll love. As a side benefit of not having to plan and set up my own seminars, I had the time to participate in other schools’ seminars. The latest one I attended was a non-FMA seminar hosted by Eskrima Digest list member Jonathan Kessler for Mick Coup (founder of C2: Core Combatives and a senior teacher with the British Combat Association). Throughout the day I kept thinking that Gints Klimanis and his Gentleman’s Fight Club was missing out on a good thing. They would have enjoyed attending this one. I certainly did. To those of you reading this, if you’re interested in getting to the essence of hand to hand combat and increasing your chances of survival, I heartily recommend that you attend Mick Coup’s seminars whenever you can. I will. A couple of days ago, Pangulong Guro Darren Tibon called, asking whether he could use my location on the third weekend of this month to hold a fund-raiser for the nonprofit USFMAF. Only two weeks away… Since I have no common sense, I said yes. So I’m throwing out this crazy idea to the local northern California FMA community for your consideration and inviting you to….: WHAT: Spur-of-the Moment FMA Seminar/Get-Together and Swap Meet WHEN: March 24, 2007 Saturday beginning at 12 noon and ending whenever WHERE: Pamana ng Mandirigma (Warrior’s Legacy), IPMAF USA Headquarters, 4460 Hacienda Drive, Pleasanton CA 94566 WHO: Definites: GM ALFREDO BANDALAN (Doce Pares) DR. REMY PRESAS JR (Modern Arnis) PG DARREN TIBON (Serrada) Definite Maybe’s GM ANTHONY DAVIS (Serrada) GM VER VILLASIN (Villasin Balintawak) Open Invitation This is a spur-of-the-moment open invitation to all other local FMA masters and grandmasters to teach a one hour segment in this ad-hoc event. . ADMISSION: Since I’m starting with just three definites, the starting admission price is only $35. Register now (notify me) and that will be your price even if other instructors are added. As more instructors are added to the “Definites”, I will increase the price by $10 per instructor (and the duration of the seminar will increase by one hour). SWAP MEET >From 11-12, as participants arrive for the seminar, they can bring whatever martial art gear, books, videos (no bootleg!), and toys they may want to sell or swap. (Perhaps Stickman can bring some of his synthetic sticks. Remy Jr can bring Modern Arnis videos. I have padded sticks from the Philippines that I will sell for $10 apiece; but I’m temporarily out of rattan sticks. Perhaps someone can bring those?) Participants can lay them out on the training floor until the seminars begin, After all the seminars presenters have finished, we can stay open for another hour to wrap up the FMA barter and banter.. Any takers? Ana Melissa De Leon pocketed six gold medals while her younger brother, Christopher De Leon, scored three more victories as Baguio City harvested 20 of the 25 gold medals staked in arnis. De Leon reigned supreme in the girls' individual single weapon, individual double weapon, half lightweight in full-contact event, espada y daga, team single weapon and team double weapon to become the most bemedaled athlete in the games, so far. "Aside from studying, I spent most of my time training," said De Leon, a charming 15-year-old junior from the Baguio City National High School. "Those sacrifices obviously paid off." De Leon thus eclipsed the achievements of gymnast Marie Rose Mendoza and long-distance runner Lany Cardona, both quadruple gold medalists. De Leon's brother, Christopher, nailed victories in the boys' pinweight full-contact event, individual single weapon and individual double weapon competitions that boosted Baguio's tally to 32 gold, 29 silver and 18 bronze medals on Day 4 of the week-long event. Both siblings were accompanied by their father and coach, retired police colonel Manuel de Leon. Baguio's Kristian Lango Sakiwat and Reynaldo Estabilo also had three gold medals each with victories in the men's individual single weapon (sakiwat), men's individual double weapon (estabilo), team single weapon and team double weapon. Cagayan took the other five arnis gold medals. Angelica Montegrico (women's bantamweight), Kevin Columna and Kenneth Columna (boys team single and double weapon), Michael Jade Ramos (men's featherweight) and Christian Cabantac (men's extra lightweight) won gold medals for Cagayan. Erstwhile overall leader Pangasinan, which got a lone gold courtesy of Prince Mark Aquino in the under-14 division yesterday, dropped to second with a 19-13-12 medal haul. Other gold medalists from Baguio were Jun Ray Emilio (featherweight division), Benny Oralio Jr. (extra lightweight division), Ayatollah Gadaoni (lightweight), Michael Anayasan (bantamweight), Claire Donga-as (women's featherweight) and Mara Olivia Damatac (women's extra lightweight). In chess, Jake Dela Cruz and Rose Marie Parina dominated the Open section of their respective classes to capture Nueva Ecija (5-2-5) two gold medals for the day. --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2007 18:10:42 -0700 From: "Gordon Walker" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Fwd: Martial arts Representative Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net hey, check out the latest scam spam.
