This is a component of the entire energy field and transference curriculum. Although physical touch is involved, this tends to be more of an exercise of the mind and spirit than anything else. As I tend to be a rather gung-ho type this concept is rather difficult for me to apply except at half speed during drills. Can anyone suggest a good book, website, specific exercises, etc. for developing and/or practicing this important skill on my own? Thank you for your time and attention. - Anthony Ray wrote: Sorry, I screwed up and deleted your email to the list entitled... I had more than enough instructors to even go a second or third day, but not enough sign-ups from actual participants for me to make it financially worth-while for them. If I throw a seminar, both the instructors and the students have to benefit; otherwise, it's a no-go. My apologies to the few (emphasis on ?few?) who actually pre-registered. You?ve earned yourself a free pass to one of any of the events (your choice) I may have this year? The "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" Stephen Covey. I was attending one his seminars for work about ten years ago and happened to be seated right down front. He wanted to demo two people working together on/in a disagreement, and for them come up with a win-win solution. He happened to pick me, probably just because I am a lot bigger than he is -and- I was just a few feet away from him. We were to "Indian wrestle". Every time I forced his arm back I won a dime. Every time he forced my arm back he was to win a dime. The idea was to devise a strategy, without speaking to each other, where we both maximized our $. Now is when your above question comes into play... I could just sense in his body language and his very relaxed nature that he wasn't really going to resist me. What was going on? Was I being set up? Win-Win situation... When he said "Go!" instead of trying to force his arm back, I pulled mine back. He got a dime. Then I reversed it and pushed his arm back. I got a dime. We just went back and forth; dime, dime, dime, dime. Win-Win-Win-Win. What has that got to do with anything? Well, after some amount of time spent doing drills and flow sparring and full-contact fighting, you do gain a sense of what the other person is going to do before they do it.... by how they move, how they carry themselves, how relaxed or tense they are, where they are looking, etc. -The- grandmaster of this is Cacoy Canete. At ~88 years old he can still take your stick away in the flash of an eye. He can just sense what you're going to do before you do it. He gets a half-beat ahead of you and disarms you with the greatest of ease. And he does it time after time after time after time... I firmly believe it is a sense that you develop with time and with practice. There may be books out there on it, but I believe you don't -really- get it until you've trained for 10 or 25 years. Or as Cacoy always says, "When you've been doing this for as long as I have, you'll be good at it too". I just pray that when I'm in my 80s I'm still swinging a stick. Much less disarming young punks that are 40 or 50 or 60 years my junior. :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2007: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
