Yes its based on fiction, based on a comic strip, and yes its rather homo erotic with the loin cloths and the oil, but since Damon Carro was the lead choreographer and i personally listened to his conversation to Guro Inosanto where he said that it was mainly Filipino then i find the comment funny! : ) The shields were also based on Guro Inosanto's one - a filipino one for a laugh. That doesnt detract from your opinion that it is crap as a film, but its great to see good martial artists give us something interesting in what otherwise would be just another film. I liked the krabi krabong in Troy and i loved the FMA in this. BTW Braveheart was factual either and Mel Gibson is Australian. Im sorry you cant rejoice with us! ; ) Hope you get well soon. I would characterize it as historical fiction -- from what I recall, he did a lot of research (hoplology?) to get things right. IMO that movie, even though it was based on a graphic novel, was garbage. What a joke to say that the fight choreography had a lot of Filipino influence. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hey Kim,,,my heartfelt sentiments to you as well! Gosh,,really I'm elated to know and thanks for having FMA a part of you, gratifying, and filled with lasting memories (below). Certainly, more sharing and less BS would be a best scenario for the arts. But life is such though - the "yen and yang" paradigm, so, just have to shrugged our shoulders from the negatives and move on. One thing for sure,,you are one of our "Kapatid" (brother/sister) in the art. Continued success and happiness to your FMA involvement. I will see you around the martial arts playing fields one of these days. Regards to Mid-West School of EsKrima. Jorge Penafiel ==== Hi Jorge, What a beautiful sentiment. If more people would remember the reasons why we devote a lifetime of study to a martial art, there would be more sharing, and a whole lot less BS when it comes to the arts. As a westerner who was lucky enough to be accepted into the FMA's back in the '70's, I am most grateful for the knowledge shared, the trust bestowed, and the memories gained of the extremely talented martial artists I've been so fortunate to have met in my 29 years in Eskrima, some of who are now gone from this world.
