Before I had even had time to register, he had a training knife in my hand and was demonstrating the use of the sling blade against an attacker to the delight of the fortunate few gathered around. My aches from the long drive washed away as Guro Abon's passion for teaching his art got us revved up for what we knew would be another exciting seminar. The first day started with throws, counters, and locks from Harimaw Buno, including some rolling throws and slapping that was a lot of fun. After that, it was on to Tres Puntos knife defense in both largo and corto, including a few disarms. The second day began with simple and direct stick training in the traditional methods of Paete, Guro Abon's home town. Some disarms and locks with the stick were shown as well. Next up was the sling blade, including deceptively simple but effective methods of use and some of the basic knife defense drills. Last but not least: more buno. Standing locks and takedowns were accompanied by a demonstration of the pugung, a smaller version of the lubid (rope). The day was capped off with very painful escapes from ground fighting positions, and the announcement of three new GAT Guros in Chicago; Mike "Tandang" Eugenio, Eugene "Tuko" Amante, and Mike "Tagak" Albandia join Dennis "Musang" Duria in representing Garimot Arnis in Chicago. Guro Abon will be in the Midwest again May 19-20 in St. Louis, Missouri. More details to follow. tim ____________________________________________________________________________________ Now that's room service!
