One thing that is clear, and is even clear in the below... Angel obviously had a way of making each student feel very special. I've heard many of Angel's students claim that they were his favorite, how they spent thousands of hours with Angel, lived with Angel, ate and drank with Angel. If all of these stories were true, Angel would have had a house full of students sleeping on the floor and he would have weighed 250 lbs from all the adobo and beer he drank with them all... Tony2Sticks is no longer with us, I believe that he passed a few years ago. But below is an email is sent me ten years ago about an event in the Saratoga, CA area where Jimmy Tacosa threw a party for Angel to announce that he (Jimmy) was to become the head of Cabales Serrada Escrima after Angel's passing. As Mike Inay shared with me, Jimmy would have been a fine selection for this honor, but it was never Angel's wish for any of his earliest and best students to take over his art. It was his art and it was to stay in his family. Vincent was to inherit the art. The story that Tony shared is exactly that same story I've heard from others that were in attendance. Essentially that Angel blew up when he heard why Jimmy was hosting the party. Angel made it VERY clear that Vincent was to carry on as head of CSE, not Jimmy, not Mike, not Al, and for sure not the students that came along much later like Khalid or Kimball or Darren or ???. I am not a student of Vincent's. I am Inayan! Mike did the right thing by creating his own system and did not attempt to take over something that was Angel's. Even tho Mike or Jimmy or Al would have been an excellent choice as the Grandmaster of CSE, it rightfully belonged to Vincent. Mike Inay knew this and accepted this and did the right thing by going off and doing his own thing, always giving full, complete and proper respect to Angel as someone that was important to his development as an exceptional Eskrimador. But he never lied to others or attempted to make them believe that he was Angel's best friend, best student, or best eating and drinking buddy... Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- Subj: Serrada Lineage Date: 97-04-07 01:26:35 EDT From: Tony2stiks In regards to Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V4 #91. My name is Tony Teixeira, or as Master Gabriel Ascunsion calls me Tony Two Sticks Teixeira. I have been practicing Serrada Escrima for 20 years. I was blessed to be trained under Grand Master Angel Cabales for most of those years. It was Master Gabriel Ascunsion who convinced me to train with him and Grand Master Angel Cabales. Master Ascunsion and I were studying Chi-Fi Kempo Karate in Lathrop at the time. Master Ascunsion had told me about how his friend and nieghbor Vincent cabales had introduced and trained him before he started with Vincent's father. After viewing a demo of Vincent Cabales and Gabe, I was convinced that I needed to train in the Serrada System. This was in 1976. Gabe and I trained with Angel for years, at least 3 times a week from 4 - 6 hours a day. Needless to say, we became very close friends and confidants. We put on many demos and seminars. Angel considered me at the time his business Agent, Chief Assistant Instructor and close friend. During these years of training and bonding, we had many conversations about what Grand Master Angel Cabales goals and ambitions were. Although I am only considered (Dalawang Grado), "Pangalawang Guro," I was featured in Official Karate Magazine, September 1985 as Master Angel Cabales assistant and chief instructor, which Grand Master Angel Cabales signed and endoresed my copy of the magazine. We had held a work shop on Sunday, 11/18/84, the 3rd Annual Kali Seminar. With regards to the time Jimmy Tacosa was trying to make a bid with Grand Master Angel Cabales to be designated the Grand Master successor but was turned down. It just so happens that Angel had invited me to come with him and his family to the presentation of Jimmy Tacosa's certification. The event was held in Saratoga, CA and attended by many Martial Arts columnists and Martial Arts practitioners, including Jason Inay. Angel had asked me to read the ceremonial plaque that was inscribed in solid gold lettering and to explain to him what it meant. After I read the plaque, I explained to Angel that the plaque was in fact giving Jimmy Tacosa all rights and privileges of the Angel Cabales Serrada System and recognizing Jimmy Tacosa as the Grand Master of the Cabales Serrada System. Angel was outraged that he had been tricked into a situation that was false. He immediately disclaimed that Jimmy Tacosa was not to succeed as the Grand Master of his System, but that in fact he was only receiving a Masters Degree. The only successor of the Cabales Serrada System was to be handed down to his son Vincent Cabales after he had passed away and Vincent's son would succeed Vincent when he passes on. Two weeks before Angel passed away, my wife and I had visited Angel and he had asked me to make sure that the System would be recognized as Vincent Cabales succeeding the Cabales Serrada System. I gave my word to him that I would respect his wishes and to this day I still am and will respect his request that Vincent Cabales is the Grand Master of the Cabales Serrada System. And to all those who have had the opportunity to study and received degrees from Grandmaster Angel Cabales, not recognizing or acknowledging his wishes and request is surely doing him dishonor and discredits his dream of a united coalition of the Serrada Escrima Art. I am speaking as a mediator, and a respected practitioner of the Serrada System that we all respect and honor Grand Master Angel Cabales' wishes that we recognize Grand Master Vincent Cabales as the successor of the Serrada System. Let us put our egos and trivial pursuits away and build the Cabales Serrada System with unification and true recognition as our beloved late Grand Master wanted it.
