If anyone has any info on any classes there, could you please contact me? A friend is living there now and looking to keep up his training. When I mentioned to him last week end that some one on this list had intented to start classes out that way, he asked me to get the details. Would it have something to do with a particular object's oreintation? Does "salakab" mean "facing downward" and "tungya" as "facing upward". If not, sirit na (I give up)! Best regards, Jose (Dong) -----Original Message----- From: Pananandta@aol.com To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Sent: Sun, 3 Jun 2007 9:25 pm Subject: [Eskrima] Kali & local words (Re: Eskrima digest, Vol 14 #179 - 7 msgs) Hi James (Sy Jr.) Great logic. I have written something about the different names used to refer to Philippine stick and knife fighting. It is a chapter in a book that was supposed to be published by CFW Enterprises back in 1983 but never was. As examples of "local" Tagalog words, let me give two now and check if any Tagalog speaker would know what they mean. The words "salakab" and "tungya" are "local" words used in my village. I will not give the meanings of the words. Feel free to ask your parents, grandparents, anybody. It is very unlikely that an Ilongo or a Waray, or any Filipino whose dialect is not Tagalog would know of such words. Note to EDers: If James speaks to me in his dialect, he might as well talk to me in Greek, I wouldn't understand him. Best. Especially the ones on gojushiho and jiong :-) and the article on the throws in karate kata. By the way, I picked up my old local magazine last night - Martial Arts Illustrated (published by Mr. Alex Co) and saw an article on you written by Mr. Rene Navarro. What also got me to ask about this was a comment I heard from some of my fellow instructors about a karate group that had included arnis in their training and were participating in forms competition. From what I heard, their concept was of arnis as karate with a stick. Now I'm not sure how they implemented that, but it seemed to be a sign of how things went when these two arts were practiced together. It seemed to have been the main idea behind their arnis forms. BTW, the most widespread karate style right now, at least in Metro Manila is shotokan. Also on another note: A few years ago, I was with my silat guro, H. Yasser Tanadjalan, when we met an old man in the park where we were practicing. The old man watched our practice for a while and this led to a conversation. It was then my guro recognized his former sensei, Roberto Gonzales, yes, the son of Latino Gonzales. Guro Yasser has a second dan in shorin ryu karate as well as being a guro in silat (and he teaches some arnis too). I had seen pictures of sensei Roberto when he was younger, and I didn't connect the pics with the man I met at first...How time flies...Small world, and a few steps away as they say...
