The other one is the Crocodile Dundee, when he went to America, He was being hold up and asking for his wallet, and the two is holding a small forlding knife, and Dundee goes that not a knife, he pull his large Bowie and this the knife and both of the muggers just run. This is real, specially in the Philippines they will attack you for valid reason at all, and the bad part of it even they know you is more bad. Becaused they would not fight you fair, they will attack you whne the time you least expected. Ambush, Surprise attack, many good Eskrimador died becaused they were attack multiple and attack behind. Shoot to death and chop to death, then the assailant will dissapears. My Uncle Rogelio "Andak" Baet (Pandak of Shorty) is Public Enemy Number One on 1970's to 80's he died on 1987 poisoned by his lovers. He is the so called "Killer of Carmona" Cavite. He lives in Binan, Laguna, but he stay most of his day in Carmona, Cavite. He was hired to kill. On his Diary, we found that he was hired to kills 79 times. He killed 79 people for money ranging P7000 to P25,000 per person. I remember his best friend Entoy Barooga telling me a story of his best friend "Andak" in Paete. During their younger times, he would challenge the biggest guy in our town for money and since he small in stature, everyone fall in to that challenge. Soon the fight is on, and off-course my Uncle win and get the money after that. He found killing is makaing a living, now what happen, he double crossed by someone who hired him. He blackmail his misstress to poisoned him and that the end of his story. He was attack and killed by the women he though she love him.. On my mother side family "Salazar" in Siniloan, Laguna. My cousin Apolinario "Polly" Salazar noted "Killer" of Paagahan was also my cousin and Reggie "Rj" Salazar the noted "Granade" holddaper in Siniloan he killed his classmates by multiple stabb using h pencil. He was put to jubinile jail, get out and kill again, then since hes family is influencial figure in Siniloan the other family dont bother to fight in court, but already retaliated many times putting Reggie to the hospital but he still alive. In other hand my cousin "Polly" was stabb to death on Paagahan, inside passenger jeepney one day going home to Siniloan. Well, that is why I left Paete, for one reason I was "quoted" to be dead before I turn 30, I am now 44 and I am still alive, thanks to Uncle Sam giving me a new way of life. In GP Baet’s case, I agree to his statement that survival is the very essence of martial arts. There’s a story in our province, Negros Occidental, about a young Arnisador who studied diligently under his aging master. When time came that his teacher had given him everything, he started to become big headed. Then one day, he challenged his teacher to a “to the death” duel so that he can prove that he was the best. The junior students of the master tried to convince him not to fight. He was frail and old and the young Arnisador knew all his techniques. He didn’t stand a chance. Nevertheless, the old teacher told his student to met him at the river bank the following morning and to bring his bolo. The following morning the two met at the riverbank. “Where is your bolo,” the student asked, seeing that his teacher was holding nothing. “I’m sorry. I forgot. I’m so old. You see those kawayans (bamboo) over there? Kindly cut one for me. That will be my weapon,” said the old man. “What? You’ll use a bamboo against my bolo? Hahaha you must be crazy,” the student replied. The student went on as requested. He used a diagonal forehand slash to cut the bamboo, leaving one end pointed. Then the young Arnisador handed it to the old master. Without warning, the old master stabbed him in the stomach. Surprised, the young Arnisador had not offered any form of defense. Before he passed away, the young Arnisador overheard his teacher say, “I may have taught you all my techniques but what I haven’t taught you is how to survive in the face of overwhelming odds.” In a real fight, it’s not about winning but surviving; it’s not about art but controlling, maiming, or killing. These kinds of things do happen in the mountainous areas of the Philippines. James U. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net hi red, you could have put these in one mail you know to cut down on the volume! ; ) I wont regurgitate the points that have been made in earlier posts ( you can access the archives) but the reference to the book is in context to the timing of the term. This predates it from the accusation that is was a US generated term. The 1902 Aglipay reference also predates the US influence. This simply leads to the conclusion that the term originated from the Phillipinnes. Whether it - as some scholars suggest - predated arnis/eskrima (spanish generated terms) is the main thrust of the thread and the biggest objection is the use of the 'Mother Art' claim. Whether the US Filipinos became acquainted with the term when they returned to lead the Ranger outfits or they took it with them to the US when they initially left the islands is not as yet known. in context to the questions being discussed, it is irrelevant whether i have read the book or not. Very little of what was done in corto/close range consisted of using the daga for espada y daga training. Solo daga training was not demonstrated as much in public for many underlying reasons, but it does take place. You'll probably have better luck in locating Arnis training in Pangasinan though. Times have changed and perhaps more of the Ilocano peoples have likely went public to share their craft. I do wish you the best of luck(and Much safety) when you do arrive in the PI. It is supposedly also the site of the 1st Catholic church in Panay (courtesy of the Agustinian Fathers). Interestingly, it is also probably one of the few towns in the Philippines where the majority of the inhabitants converted to the Philippine Independent Church of Father Aglipay during the heyday of the First Philippne Republic.
