Your letter took me back to my childhood...you see, I am Native American decent, and like you, am dismayed at the myths connected to my culture, myths that continue to be perpetuated to this day. I remember as a small child listening to my aunts, uncles and grandparents describe what it was like to be Native American in this country (their country), and how their very culture seemed on the verge of disappearing. The loss of any culture diminishes all mankind, for it is a loss of valuable history that is a part of us all. Kim E. When the September 11 tragedy happened, the Americans were the ones most shocked and hurt. Even if other nations sympathized with them, no other race can comprehend and appreciate the real pain the Americans felt during those times. The same is true with the Kali myth. Westerners may not give a fuss about it (it’s just a name) but for Filipinos it’s another story. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Kes41355@aol.com Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2007 08:32:13 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: not a legitimate form of self-defense??!!?? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi all, Whoo, I wouldn't want to be the person who had told Mike Inay (RIP), Jimmy Tacosa, Cacoy Canete (or any of his brothers), Al Concepcion, Michael Amistoso, Rob McDonald, Al McLuckie, Richard Bustillo, or literally a host of others (I've only included those I'm familiar with) that the FMA's were ineffective. That would really ruin somebody's day... Brandon Katz is a student of mine, and has a no-nonsense approach to his martial art that carries over nicely to his weapons making craft. I have two recent pictures of Brandon shattering a coconut with a Purple Heart baston (using a stick exactly like the one he made for you, Steve) to test the wood's durability. The stick didn't even dent, but the coconut did not survive. anyone interested in seeing these photos, please feel free to write and I'll send it to you, otherwise they will both be posted on my upcoming website by next week, and I'm sure Brandon will be posting them on his site as well(_www.eskrimacustoms.com_ (http://www.eskrimacustoms.com) ). I have several of Brandon's sticks myself, in both Purple Heart and hickory, and they are among my favorite weapons. Kim E. There is a small review on the Inayan Forums. End result is I highly recommend Mr. Katz's work based on the one I have so far. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Kes41355@aol.com Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2007 08:49:30 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: teachers and fighters Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi again all, Man, I've been busy in here today, but lots of good posts, folks, let's keep this up... Anyway, I heard something a long time ago that rings true today. There are fighters and there are teachers, but the mark of a true Master is one that turns out Masterpieces (students that help his/her art live on).
